besides hunting them down and netting them, is there a good way to fix a whelk problem.. i have quite a few of them that came in with my LR and LS....
is there anything you can put in that will eat them but not other snails?

Nope. Just pull them when you see them if you want to get rid of them.
Tongs are a good thing to use.

Being fairly new to this saltwater addiction, I NEED to know how to tell the whelks apart from other snails? I am running a coldwater salt tank and my water conditions are great, but I've lost several mussels and one "ramshorn" type snail over the past few days. Funny thing is that they just turn up EMPTY!!! I was suspecting the baby tautog in my tank as the culprit, but I have a bunch of snails that hitchhiked into the tank with some live rock. (ND TO WHOEVER THINKS TAUTOGS ARE UGLY HAS NEVER REALLY SEEN ONE IN ITS NATURAL SETTING-THEY ARE GORGEOUS AND THEIR MARKINGS LOOK JUST LIKE RATTLESNAKE SKIN!!!)
THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!
