+1....read the top threads in the new hobbyist section....some are a little too late though....what worries me is that you lost so many fish to this "unknown" ailment......I would be afraid that whatever you add from now on may "catch" whatever it was.....
ALSO....Can you post pics of your ENTIRE set-up? Filters, lights, skimmers everything you could possibly get a shot of....then we can help you with your equipment....It seems you are saying you are not even sure what you have....am I correct?
Pics will help us a lot

thanks everyone, and ouch, I feel even more unworthy of my little piece of ocean in my family room than ever before
however, I agree taking care of my tank myself, is the only real solution, and I'm willing, but am soo clueless. I've read books and none lay them out in terms I can truly understand, so it's all so intimidating. I now know how to do water changes ( I am using purchased purified water and adding my own salt) and test the water, but not what to do when there are problems or how to spot them, or how many fish I can safely have, or how much or what exactly they should be fed or When to add water, when to test, and really what are all the components under the tank, what's the purpose how do I maintain, etc.?.....I entered into this admittedly blindly and trusted my fish service to teach me and see me through and that didn't happen. I spent well over $6 k and have nothing but guilt for the lost lives and those left for me to see them through. So that's where the frustration comes through....where to go now. I am stuck with the tank I have, it's not an option for me to downsize at this point, I spent the wad/ budget on this one, I've got 2 kids in college, need I say more. thanks again for trying to help.
When I started my 55G tank almost 3 years ago I didn't have a clue either. Before then I couldn't even keep a 10G freshwater tank with a few gold fish without killing them. But, my daughters and I wanted to have saltwater fish and so when your daughters want something..well you just have to comply right? So we got a saltwater tank.
I didn't have a CLUE how to keep a SW tank but I do know how to read so I got online and spend hours and hours, days upon days reading and researching until I finally started getting acclimated (pun intended) to the hobby.
Like I said that was almost three years ago. My first tank I killed off slowly, then I shut it down for almost a year and now I've started another one and have had it up and running 4-5 months and things are MUCH better..not perfect yet but much better.
I am still struggling to understand all I need to know but that's why I like this forum so much. There is a TON of knowledge here. Most have different opinions regarding many areas of the hobby but they all have the same common thread in that they love the life that inhabits their own part of the ocean.
I can spend hours just watching my tank and I don't even have that much stocked in it yet. It's incredibly fascinating and so far it's worth all the time, money, and the frustrations that pop up on occasion.

I will post pictures in the next coming days. No I'm not sure exactly what equipment I have or what each things purpose is sadly, but I can list what is on my invoice to give an idea. Thanks everyone

Hang In there Robyn. Many of us have been where you are at. Take it slowly and youll bounce back! It seems your on the right track with wanting to learn and take care of your aqua pals. Youll feel like a compleat bad A$$ when you get even the most basic Knowlage about whats going on in your tank. Its all uphill from then on. things grow, stuff pops out that you have no idea where it came from. Youll be reading something somewhere and say "Well no S####, that makes sense, im gonna try that." And before you know it your aptasia is gone, your clownfish is blowing you kisses and that damsel that harrasses everyone has ended up in the sump somehow...
Well maybe not before you know it

OK let me be the heavy here (gee what else is new) post a paragraph of the fundamentals of setting up your tank that you read in a book and then tell me what parts you can not truly understand and why they are so intimidating to you

I would never buy livestock from a person who did maintenance on my tank. It would seem to be in their interest for your livestock to not survive, so they could continue to make money off you. I've quit having a tank twice before, but I always seem to come back bigger and larger, with that said, you already have a large tank, so you just need to get the fundamentals down.

I would say be very grateful you have had the funds for the tank. Look at what is going on around the world. We are very blessed to have what we have.

If you have a passion and the want then you are not ready to leave the hobby. You can do this yourself. I think we have all had that feeling of giving up after problems. I have learned once a system is set up properly, it runs itself in a way.
Some companies are in it just for the money. They do not teach you what you need to know and will sell not healthy fish. It's sad but true. But as it was stated their are many companies out there that do help very much and sell top notch livestock.
Hang in there

I am newer here but we will be able to tell you exactly what you have, the exact purpose and what you need to do if anything with each different item.

I guess I'll jump on the aquarium service bashing bandwagon...
A few weeks ago my mother-in-law was speaking very highly of the service that she has for the reef in her office. Then my wife was visiting her office yesterday and sent me a text that said, "OMG! My moms tank is overrun with aiptasia". She sent me a pic that she took with her phone. The aiptasia was so out of control that it looked like a mat of GSP covering what wasn't overrun by red mushrooms.
I guess they are doing a heck of a job maintaining that Aiptasia farm. I guess it's a good thing that the only fish in the tank is a clown.
