Which Instrument?

My brother got an electric guitar for his birthday in july, and on Saturday I got one myself. It's a blue Yamaha Pacifica, also electric, for $275 since everything at the store was @ 50% off. I've tuned it and all and am still at the very newbie stage.
I just want to know if anyone else plays instruments and if you guys could give us some tips/info?
also, I want to play the trumpet. is the trumpet a hard instrument to master or should I do something else. Also, what kind of brand is good for trumpets?

I play Guitar
My best advice is teach yourself but dont teach yourself the wrong way .
Once you develop bad habits they are very hard to kick .... Ive been playing four 8 years and im STILL trying to get my pinky more involved.
Dont be affraid to learn all genre's of music.
from Classical all the way to Metal
Start with the basics. Tuning, Finger and wrist stamina, and dont focus on learning everybody else's songs if you plan on writing your own.
Start out by learning "Wonderwall" - Oasis, it has to be the easiest song to play.

i know many people who play trumpets. its not a hard instrument to learn but is is quite difficult to perfect. i would suggest a yamaha or a blessing for a beginner, but if you plan on really getting into it then get a bach, best trumpets out there for a hefty price of around the mis $1000's

I agree with Oceanists. I have been playing for 11 years and I strongly promote self teaching. The internet is a powerful tool. You can find all the resources you need there. The reason I am so gung ho for being self taught is that by doing so you will develop your own style. Many times, IMO, people who learn by soley taking lessons for years have no style and they sound bland. They end up playing exactly like their teacher.
(Note: I am not saying everyone that takes lessons has no style so don't flame me peopel!!!)

Trumpets???
I thought we were talking about guitars.
Anyway, I am a self taught guitar player. I believe that you should mainly teach yourself, but some instruction is helpful.

Yes the internet is very helpful , but be aware of badly botched guitar tabs , check out www.ultimate-guitar.com they are all rated

I'm almost 16 and I've been playing the guitar since I was 9. I taught myself completely. The downside is I can only read tabs. I definately had struggles and times when I wouldn't play. All I can say is just have fun. Find songs like back in black, they sound awesome but they are easy to play and work your way up. I took one guitar lesson and I hated it. I would say self teaching is the best.

Forget looking for a trumpet. I played trumpet for years in school. You need to focus on guitar. Here is why:
Learn a few chords and the ladies will come.
No girl can resist a guy who plays the guitar. Guitars are especially effective at parties.

I play an acoustic guitar. I can't strum at all. All I can do is pick like Chet Atkins and Doyle Dykes. I taught myself how to play the guitar 4 years ago but a year ago I started takin lessons. That's because I wanted to know more about music. Do you plan to strum or pick? I suggest learnin how to play by ear and to be able to read music. I play by ear and can only read TAB. That's sad. hahaha. Oh well, Chet Atkins didn't read music so I guess I'm good to go. haha. Good luck!

I have a really good ear so it was easy for me to teach myself...I also new some basic music because I've played the trumped, saxaohone, piano and drums. When your in college you can also play your guitar in your dorm. With a trumpet not exactly

Whoa, sorry to burst your bubble, but I sell Yamaha Pacifica's for the everyday price of $199. Your best bet is a dvd to learn from. Alot of people try to learn by ear, but later on when you may want to learn other music it can be difficult if you don't know chords. Most learners dvd's come with the tabs as well. Best of luck to you, the most important thing is to have fun!!!! Enjoy playing and you will get so much more out of it!

Trumpets, as with any instrument, range in cost and quality. If you are just starting out I would go with a lower end one E.M. Winston is a descent one that isn't too expensive. Again unless you are going to take lessons you may want to pick up a learners dvd to help you get started.

They would sell it for almost $500 with the amp, guitar, strap, tuner, extra strings, dvd, picks(which I didn't find in the box, dad had opened it though), and some other stuff. It came out to 295 with the guitar package, 1 guitar stand, 2 picks, 2 of those sheet music stands, which was not bad. I also want to get an acoustic guitar so that I could actually play it without and amp and they also sound great. Thanks, i've really been stressing my self which is not a good sign. Came from the practice today, and didn't learn much.

Ah, don't give up, once you learn the chords everything else falls right into place. Play around with it by yourself too. The first time you actually get a part of a song down you will be so happy!!
Btw, I sell the whole package for $299 with everything you mentioned, but thats NY, Cali is obviously more expensive :joy:
