I have a brand new arctica in-line chiller 1/10hp rated for up to a 130gl tank, and it will not keep my water cooled down. I have a 75gl, does anyone know why this could be?

what is the normal temp, what are you trying to get it at? and what pump are you using for the chiller?

What size pump are you running on it? It should run kinda slow and it might be fighting with your heater...

Have you tried fans? It's a lot cheaper. I have a 125 gallon tank with two 250W MHs and I don't run a chiller, AND I live in the Phoenix area. During the summer my tank stayed around 80. I have a fan blowing across the top of my tank that only runs when my MHs are on and one fan in the sump that runs 24/7. Works like a charm.

I try to get my temp at 78F. But it will slowly rise through out the day, starting at about 79F and continue to about 81-82. I was using a pump that done around 350-400gph, and *********** told me to use one thats slower and now I'm using a 250gph. I have my heater set at 77F. So I don't think thats the problem. I do have glass tops, but I would like to keep them on there, to prevent as much evaporation as possible. But the thing is, when the lights are off at night, the temp still doesn't drop to what it should be. I think I will try the fan idea.

well that is off then, the glass tops will make it hotter, but only being 1deg it shouldnt be hard to keep up...and looks like your pump is fine since jbj recommends 4GPM.....hard to say, i'd try the fans

Evaporation = cooling. Heat is lost through the tank through the process of evaporation. If you leave the glass tops on, you're limiting evaporation, which is trapping heat. I realize that you want to avoid having to topoff your tank regularly, but it's better to do this that overheat your tank. With glass tops, the fans won't do much, since they can't really blow over the water.
Also, where do you have the chiller located? If it's in the same room as the tank, it won't work as efficiently, since it needs cooler air to transfer heat.

If i were you I would unplug your heater and remove your glass tops for one week and see if that makes a diff...
Where is your return water going is it dumping in your sump where your heater is?

The chiller is next to the tank, The return water is going directly into the aquarium, however, I keep the heater in the aquarium as well. I'll go ahead and take the tops off, and I just ordered fans from another website. Hope this works, it just suck that I paid so much for this chill and it isn't working how I had hoped. It guarentees to keep the water at a steady temp, for up to a 130gl. Thanks again everyone.
