what size is your tank?
what are the dimensions you have to work with?
and just a thought. you mite want to consider removing the bio-balls and replace them with either live rock. or live rubble rock.

75g tank
I've heard both good and bad opinions on the bioballs. For now i'm going to see how it goes as is. ijust need to decide on the skimmer.

for good advice you need to post the dimensions that you available to work with, as in, Height, and width and depth of your skimmer area.
I noticed that you said 5" water depth, most in sump skimmers usaully run in at least 8" of depth.
Give some more dims, and someone will be able to help more.
But looking at your sump, I would say that a MSX 160 would be great if you can raise your water level to around 8"

my bad, i thought the pic of my sump with a measuring tape was clear.
anyways
11 1/2" X 10 3/4
water depth= 5"

How about the height? As in, how tall can the skimmer be, before it hits the bottom of the dispaly tank or the stand above it.
And, you can raise the water level in the sump, correct?

26" top to bottom.
water LVL is on the "max water lvl" line.

Shut it down and let it fill with backwash. See if there's any room left over then top it off to just under overflowing
. Then start it back up, let it run for a few minutes then shut it back down. Be prepared for a possible spill, but it shouldn't.

also keep in mind that your skimmer is going to have water in it and when you cut that off it is going to add water volume.
i know on a rs 80 euro reef you can run them as low as 6" 5 might work as well.
my sump just has a sock and a skimmer. no live rock or bioballs

3 days ago my API test kit gave me the *go ahead* to add livestock to my DT after patiently waiting for Nitrites to go down. That is when I realised that I need a protien skimmer asap. So I post here because *I know* you guys know which one is best for me.
I refuse to get livestock until I get the skimmer, so I wait.
*waits*
