Blue as in Regal/Hippo tang?
Depends on the size of the fish. Powder Blue's are not available much, if ever, under 4". Hippo tangs can be had smaller then the size of a US quarter. Obviously a quarter-size tang doesn't need a big tank.
I've seen a large, well over a foot long Hippo tang make a 500gal look like a 55gal. For longterm care, I wouldn't keep either in less then a 180gal.

i thought a foot was the largest that a hippo tang can reach ?

the hippo needs it for size potential and the powder for territorial reasons. they both need large,at least adults.

Personally I would not have two Tangs in a 180. I've seen it accomplished successfully with a Hippo and a Yellow but it's a high stress environment.

I would only have one tang in a 180 as well. 6 foot tank isnt that big.
Aqua I dont know where you are looking but my powder blue is maybe 3 inches and I can get them at that size at anytime

I have no problem with two tangs in a 6ft tank even smaller than 180g. its all about selection and order of introduction. Now granted there may become an issue with overall size potential EVENTUALLY (or immediately if you start with large specimens or particularly large species) but two tangs can easily co exist without any observable tension or friction among them. when I had a larger tank my powder brown and hippo tang lived in perfect harmony and I've seen it a thousand times. define "stress" they had plenty of swimming space (meaning not piled with rocks and 6ft), an aggression free environment, plenty to eat (two 3" algae clips a day plus twice a day feeding thanks to being in a tank with anthias), they were perfectly healthy and the hippo I raised from the size of little over a quarter coin for a year in the 30g before moving it to the 6ft tank.
hate to pull out the old horrible videos but you can see they ignored each other even at feeding. never any issues with them together and I dont feel I was a minority, I did it based on what I had seen from others in 6ft tanks. I do feel more than two is crowding but I guess everybody has an opinion.

Since they are asking the question their knowledge-ability is pretty evident IMO. Not that there is anything wrong with asking, but there is plenty of information about this topic out there and it is a complete gray area IMO.

While there might be a lot of information out there on the net and some of it may be good a lot of it is just simply rubbish. The best source of advice you can get with regard to this hobby comes from some type of qualified expert but they don’t grow on trees. The next best comes from experienced hobbyists who care about the well-being of their fish.
Doing your own research is a must I agree but when it comes to making a decision about arguably the most important area of this hobby , selecting inhabitants for you tank its good to talk to some people with experience that you respect so you can get some quality advice. For instance plenty of web sites will tell you a blue tang can go in a 75G tank but some respected posters on this forum have told me they should have 200G 8ft tanks
Look at it this way when most people have some type of medical issue they will do a bit of research themselves on the net, but they will still go and talk to their doctor about it. This is the approach I take with regards to the well being of my fish simply because I care about them

I completely agree with that, but when it comes down to it, some people won't be happy with your decision no matter what you do. With what Joe said, so many factors need to be taken into consideration that it just becomes a very difficult topic for someone to give you an answer online about. According to your original post, I think you should go with the Hippo tang, I have read experiences of powder blues being more aggressive towards other tangs. Just be prepared to hear people complain about 2 tangs in a 180(I am not one of them, I think you should be fine).

I have have to agree. You should have no problem with keeping more then one tang in a 180. I keep 3 in a 240, kole, sailfin, powder brown. Like said just give them plenty of places to hide. I think u could do either with a yellow.

thanks for all the help guys
think i will go with a blue tang simply because its easier to care for than a powder blue
so far i plan to get
yellow tang
blue tang
flamed angel
either a bicolor or coral beauty angelfish
2 clowns
i still think their is room for one more medium size fish or 2 smaller fish so if anyone has any suggestions please share them
