While we are at it, let's close all our Eurpean military bases.

Sounds good to me. Look at the billions it would save for healthcare. Isn't the purpose of the US military to protect US Borders? Why do we have to have troops in every part of the world? With today's technology, if any other country tried lobbing a nuke our direction, we'd have it blown out of the sky before it got close. Reading the article, this 'shield' is a protection against Iranian missles from hitting Poland and the Czech Republic. These two coutries are crying, because they want us to spend the millions to protect THEIR borders. This goes back to my previous question in the other thread. Why is the US military responsible for protecting every other free nation in this world? If we're going to do it, why aren't we getting some kind of compensation for it?

Why do we have troops in every part of the world? Because we are a militaristic country hell bent on controlling the world like the Nazi's. BAM, I said it.
We are sooo concerned about people attacking us that we have forgotten ourselves. We are practically invading other countries and we have been for the last 250 years! We've had one war, battle or military excursion for every decade of existance.

Wow.
Heaven forbid we have any strategic air strips to land at as well as other things I can't go into we do from the states that can't be done without stuff being placed in other countries.
It's easy to be an armchair quarterback if you don't have all the info.

Isnt that why you have ALLIES? You mean to tell me that we wouldnt be able to land at a base in Germany or the UK? How many of these other countries have bases on US soil? None, right?

They may not have bases here but you are very naive to think we don't have foreigners getting trained at our training bases or working side by side with us in the states. Yes they are our allies and yes it would be just peachy if the whole world can get along and the gov't could provide real "free" health care and gas would only be 1.00 a gallon and......

I am all for pulling out of Europe. Then the next time they get nervous about Russia or China we can make then crack open the checkbook before we return.
I just hope Gates is right about that missile defense system.

First capitalism...now the military

Amazing what damage one person can do in such little time. And I love how Biden just trivializes Iran...yeah, let's wait until it's too late, then react. Just close our eyes and blindly move forward...Hopefully Israel will do us all a favor.

I was reading up on this earlier, and its my understanding that they scrapped bush's anti missile plan for an updated anti missile plan. There's essentially no pulling out of Europe for a missile defense program, just a shift in the project design

Huh? I don't follow %%...but whatever gets you to the next day.
Just saw this article

I really don't know what your point was, but mine was the hope that Israel will take matters into their own hands, if our president is going to be a military sissy.

Isn't Obama the second coming of Hitler?
I wouldn't call Obama a military sissy. I'd call him fiscally responsible and a realist.

I would call him militarily clueless. I just hope his advisers who do know something about it are on board and agree with the move.

Like Under Secretary of State for Arms Control Ellen Tauscher ‘The first member of her family to attend college, she graduated in 1974 from Seton Hall University, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in early childhood education?
I am sure that degree qualifies her....
The program is not scrapped just different direction from what I have been reading. However the new system will not be online and operational till 2015.....I am sure Iran will be willing to put their nuke program off till then...

The new system does make a bit more sense as it will be mobile. The downside is it will not monitor Russia and to the east. Just monitor to the south/middle east.

He is just as Fiscally responsible as Bush............Dude...seriously....say what you are typing out loud beforehand...this way you can hear how stupid it will sound beforehand. Especially since the new program isn't any cheaper in cost..........

The 'fiscally responsible' comment was made based on the billions we would save from not providing free military service to all these foreign countries. I thought they were scraping the entire missle defense system, not just modifying the program.

So then you are saying the President is not fiscally responsible now?

With the exception of Cash For Clinkers, and agreeing to the previous bailouts and stimulus packages generated from the previous administration, what government spending has he done? Every other program he wants to enact is just talk right now.

I agree in theory, but remember we do have the hospital in Germany that is treating our war wounded, so we can't get rid of everything all that easy.
But I do see lots of good reasons for closing most bases in Europe and letting them fend for themselves. Could you imagine the boost to the economy of lots of places in the states if those units where posted here and we could actually re-open a few closed bases? Also I do believe we pay "rent" on most of our overseas bases, here is a crazy idea, everytime the cost of a B-2 bomber is reached in savings on "rent", build one since they can reach anywhere on the planet.

The stimulus package was all him. Cash for clunkers was part of that bill.....Do you even pay attention?
