I have a couple of types of white sponges on my live rock, could it be a white sponge? I have one variety that looks alot like a marshmallow (smooth and white) and another type that is very 'cottony'. May seem similar to a fungus.
I used work as a plant biologist and fungal taxonomist, and saltwater sponges to me seem to be alot like/ look alot like what we know as fungus in the 'dry' world. Fungi are usually an organism that feed on dead tissue. I have alot of live rock that is cuing right now and I see alot of changes and things dying and growing, but no fungus so far. But the sponges (and tunicates) are really throwing me for a loop in my tank. Very strange creatures. New ones appearing and some disintegrating.
If it is 'growing' I would say that is could be a white sponge. They seem to be some of the heartier ones in my tank. I have a large hairy crab that I am trying to catch right now, that loves to much on the white 'marshmallow' sponge. The sponge still grows.
Maybe this helps?
Good Luck,
