Don't freak out! You have a problem, but with some careful attention you can salvage something from this. First, you need to set up a QT and move your fish into it. Ich will die off in your DT from lack of a vertebrate host, so figure 6 weeks without fish in your display. Since your new QT is not cycled, you can hasten things along by using bioballs, or even a piece of rock from your display and putting them into a small filter unit in the QT. It won't be enough to prevent ammonium/nitrite build-up. so stand by with Amquel Plus and test for nitrogen wastes. Start to use Amquel exactly as directed. After you get the fish set up you then begin to hypo the fish. Take a look at the directions in the stickey at the top of this forum to see exactly how to do this. If you follow Beth's directions precisely you will probably be OK. Be sure to use a refractometer, like she says! Good luck.

There are some treatments that say that they're reef safe and cure ich, but most IMO don't work well at all.

Reef safe treatments do not kill ich. Some people have reported success with them keeping the parasites off of the fish's body. There is a list of reef safe ich medications in Beth's Common Treatments FAQ along with replies from various people on these boards that have used them. Look at the uses of fresh garlic while you are there. I would advise that you set up a quarantine tank for all of your fish. You can use a reef safe medication while you allow the QT to fully cycle.

Hi JT.
Detroit is my home town so I figured I would chime in. My fish have come down with the plague (ich) too, as of Sunday. I didn't have a quarantine tank, but do from now on.
It's funny how most people don't have one and then swear by one after an ich attack.
Anyway, what I did (thanks to this board) was take some of the water from my DT to start the QT. I put in a sponge from my DT along with the Amequel Plus. Thankfully my levels have been holding on. Over 24 hours I had lowered the salinity to 1.009. I mix the mysis shrimp with garlic and the fish are always hungry.
This is my fourth day and they still have spots, but I don't see it getting worse. It can only get better. (I hope)!
I panicked at the beginning too, but there are people here who do help. Also, once you wake up the second day and your fish are still alive, the panic will ease (somewhat).
Good Luck

Will i UV STR help rid ick?
only one stage of the ick and will also kill all the good stuff that passes through it. if its a fish only tank then it will be a good addition IMO but once ick is showing there are a few stages that a UV wont help at all because its in the fish.
