Who uses a glass top?

I have a 16 inch canopy and am trying to decided whether or not to use the glass top too. Any ideas?

I don't think you will find anyone that uses a glass top. It traps in heat and gases that can cause some bad problems within the tank. Well you might find a few but not many

I am one of the few that do. For a number of reason. The first is kids. It keeps Barbie from ending up in the tank. Also, I do not have a heat problem, so no concerns there. I do have a 3" vent in the back so that air flows freely over the entire surface. Also, my firefish love to go airborne, this keeps them in the tank. In my case the top solves more problems than it creates.

I used glass for a couple years and then cut acrylic pieces to replace the glass to avoid breakage. I get less evaporation and with the open back canopy I don'e have heat issues.

I use glass tops to keep my anthias in the tank. I am contemplating removing them, but then I will be afraid of finding one of my fish on the floor or worse, that somehow water will get to one of my MH and something bad will happen.

I think you will find VERY few if any people who have corals will use a glass top. It cuts out way to much light.

I use glass and will continue to (1) keep fish from jumping and (2) to reduce evaporation. With the 4-year-old (pan left), it'll keep him out of it for a while now that we've moved the couch away from the tank!

I use a glass top, not that I have any choice. My dad requires me to have one so that the saltwater evaporation doesn't corrode everything in my house so fast.

I used one for a while:
  • kept in too much heat
  • Blocked too much light
+ It did reduce evap - this caused temp to rise
    + Kept my halides cleaner
So yeah, I took off the top, heat is a big issue when you have 1000watts over a 55 gallon tank.

I'm using them for now, After buying the halides,I found that I don't have room in my canopy for them. I am having a new canopy made, then I will go with an eggcrate top.

Hi Viper,
You may want to try impressing your dad with the fact that when the water evaporates, the salt stays in the tank. There will not be increased corrosion in your house.
Good luck :)

I use glass tops they are custom cut and the evaporation and heat is not that bad i have no concerns about using glass,
besides i have my 98gal in my home office and its very quiet with those tops

It kept my perc in the tank for 18 months and he still managed to get out the 2" gap in the back. Jumpers is a good reason for it. And My NO fixture sits on the glass, not as large as my pc's

Yup, I know about that, but houses along the bay corrode faster than houses farther inland. A bit of salt stil goes with the evaporated water probably.

No way,
Houses by the bay get sprayed with salt water from the waves, if there is extra corrosion. 'cause salt does not evaporate. I'm sure. Humidity from excess evaporation may cause extra corrosion, but there is no salt involved in the water vapor that results from evaporation. Can't happen.

 Maybe you should move to a glass house, then you wouldn't need the tops on your tank.......:D ...but that pretty much eliminates any baseball games in your neighborhood...and of course, no rock throwing.....:notsure: :jumping:

Thanks for the responses. I noted that several people commented that glass tops reduce evaporation. To what extent do they reduce evaporation?

It makes a fairly large difference, my tank lost about 6xs the water per day. I took my glass off about a year ago becouse the salt that gets all over the underside of it can change the light spectrum, witch is only important if you have corals and I dont like cleaning glass every week.

Whats that EGG CRATE thingy majingy thing I read??
Let me know,
I have no top, water evaporates, but who cares, I change 30 percent every week.
I do get salt all over my filters and stuff,
my friend had a 2 inch gap or hole in his glass top also.
And his Snow Flake Eel still managed to be found dead on the floor one morning.
gracias.

I took some scrap plexiglass and siliconed fiberglass screen to it. I cut it to fit in place of my glass tops and it works great. It lets the tank breath and stops any suicides. I paid less than $5 for all the materials at Lowes.
