I am all for introducing the kiddies to foreign culture and stuff but shouldn't we teach them English first? My grandson has to take spanish classes 2 days a week, he is in Kindergarten.

The whole idea about the quotas was to try to balance the influx of immigrants so they would be assimilated into our culture, not change it to theirs one reagion at a time.
Are you freaking kidding me?

I have two kids in middle school that take foreign language, but it's Spanish or French.

I'm in NC, and it's the same way. Total BS...
And every teller machine, gas pump, and any other automated machine around here for that matter, wants to know if you would like to "proceed in English or Spanish". I'm like, you got to be kidding...are we in America or Mexico???
I wish I had it saved somewhere, but there's a Ted Nugent quote somewhere out there where he addresses this topic. I read it years ago, but it made a big impact.
I got one for everyone. Was at the Social Security office yesterday, filing for a new card, sitting right next to portraits of Obama and the gang. As the TV scrolled through different instructions (with some cool reef background video
) they had instructions in Spanish as well. I couldn't tell if it was for applying for social security, or just getting a card, but either way....

Many companies do take that chance!!!!! I hate to break it to you but had one of the illegals been injured on your roof it could have been your butt on the line! The burden of asking for proper documentation with regard to insurance, citizenship, permitting, and licensing for any company or individual working on your property ultimately falls to the homeowner. In summary, it's not their fault for being illegal, it would be yours for not checking. It's ridiculous. How would you like to have a lein placed on your home because your contractor used illegals and one was paralized? Happened to a friend of mine after the hurricanes. Every time these illegals step onto a job without liability insurance it is a gamble. The losses that can happen in moments by far exceeds the cost of a fender bender. The guy would simply be jailed for no license and insurance and simply deported. The fines to be paid by the vehicle owner would be minimal compared to what he saved in not being legal.....there is no downside for these people.
I didn't hire them, the company I contracted to put the roof on my house did. They are licensed and insured, not on me if their employee gets hurt while working on my house but I know what you are talking about. That is why I don't mess with hiring joe fix it to do work on my property, too many scam artists out there looking to cash in and others trying to save a buck by not carrying insurance on their people.

That is freakin outrageous! I would have some pretty strong words with that school board!
Yeah, the kids don't want to rock the boat but they don't like it much either. That's what is wrong with this country, too many people afraid of taking a little swim to make things better

I have finally gotten to the point I don't care. Those who know me now me well, those who don't can go... well anyway

During the last election the Obamites (I am talking those who were being fed talking points from the campaign) played the race card regularly and it has continued to the point where people are beginning to take a rather dim view of it.

I think I like this post...but can't tell if I'm reading it right. Can you elaborate, or rather, state it in clearer terms.

Basically your run of the mill, man on the street not political junky types are getting sick of hearing racism being blamed any time someone dares criticize the Ossiah.

I'll take an illegal willing to work, vs a lazy American who is sitting on welfare, and have 4 or 5 baby daddies, any day.

Hispanics are the largest minority group in this country, and, I believe that is true even without the "illegal" factor. I don't have a problem with offering such a large group of people that are here Spanish translations, etc. The truth is, by 2nd generation families who have stayed here, English and Spanish are spoken fluently, and by 3rd generation, many have lost the ability to speak the language fluently.
English is actually a 2nd language in many other countries. You will see signs both in English, and native language.

My biggest issue with it is teaching their children in Spanish. That is just ridiculous.

I went to McDonalds a couple of months ago. At the drive thru board, I placed my order thru the speaker, no problems. On the way up to the window, one of my kids changed his mind and wanted to switch his fries for something, or some kind of simple change like that. I asked the girl at the window to make this change. She spoke Spanish only. I asked for her manager, but she did not understand. Keep in mind, this is Raleigh, NC, not some border town further south. It became very apparent that she had been trained, and had memorized how to handle money, and how to punch the keys and pronounce the items from their menu (hence why the original order went okay), but when I tried to discuss something, carry on a two-way conversation, she didn't have a clue. Neither of us raised our voices, but we both looked at each other in the eyes and knew this wasn't right (maybe she was more worried that I was going to go in and see her boss). I finally said "no thank you", and drove off to get my food at another restaurant.
Perhaps a translator, paid by McDonalds, would have been appropriate in this case, but this is not okay in the United States of America. I don't hate people who are not "like me", but I am a firm believer that when you are in America, you speak English, pay taxes, abide by the laws, and act like an American. When I am in your country, I will do the same, or not go. I feel for the many people of Mexico who are poor. I even employ several (legal) Mexicans myself. But I do not speak their language, nor do I try, nor do they get hired if they cannot speak mine, if only to an understandable level.
As I get older I have come to accept that my music is not my kids music. There was a time for my culture, style, dress, etc., and today is different. I accept changes in Government, views on racism, gays, etc. But my beliefs on this matter are unwaivered. There may be times that I don't agree with calling INS, such as the op's case here, but none the less, an illegal is not okay. Allowing a second language to take over English is not okay. It never has been, never will.
