Why am I being told to throw out the Bio-balls?

One thing no one has mentioned is the off gassing effect bioballs have, ammonia being Highly unstable in liquid form off gasses easily into the air around it, the splashing highly overareated area the bioballs create are an excellent place for offgassing to occur (LR rublle would do the same thing in its place while also providing anaerobic break down.) looking at the pic of your sump I would leave the bio balls in remembering to regularly wash them in tank water, your not going to wash off or hurt their biological activity in anyway if you wash them in tank water even a pressure washer would have a hard time removing biofilm. and just add more LR to your sump acheiving the best of aerobic and anaerobic activities. I used to be dead set against bio balls in marine aquaria untill I did a lot of research (I am currently writing a paper describing all of it) but suffice to say you have em, they do work, and as long as you dont mind maintaining them, Use them.
