Why did you decide to have a saltwater tank?

I had freshwater growing up. I little 20 gallon tank. That is until my dog bit a 1x1 foot sections of glass out of it and eat all the fish. Gotta love labs. My friend last april was selling her 30 galllon saltwater tank because she didn't have time to take care of 2 tanks. If you saw her 80g bowfront you would agree sell one. I talked to the wife and badda bing badda bang here I am today. What's your story.......

I have also always had fw tanks....but always wanted the bright and beautiful fish of SW....oh I got cichlids...had them for many years

a relative was selling a 225G and all equip...and my husband...knowing how bad I have always wanted SW....talked me into buying it,.....especially when they said we could pay it out

I got it set up to the best of my unexperienced knowledge.....found a notsolfs in Texas, ordered some fish.....2nd visit there, they had a 54G corner reef tank....I wanted to buy a piece of coral in it, and they said the whole tank was for sale....well.....one look at hubby and he said go for it....LOL...I even talked the notsolfs guy into delivering it...THEN...in one of my FW tanks,.....a 29G....the cichlids died....so hubby says.....why not make it another sw tank

so here I am with 3....oh OOPS....I have a small 10G sw that I have been tossing my spare Kenya tree into....so I guess now I have 4 sw tanks (I just bought 2 fish to go in the 10G)

that's my story

I had a FW plnated tank when I lived alone and was in college. It relaxed me. I was going back to school and wanted a fish tank because I missed the tranquility. My husband had worked in a very reputable saltwater fish store for years before we met and loved them. He told me the only way we were getting a fish tank was if it was a reef. I agreed, and it's been all downhill since there, LOL And to think I thought it would be peaceful

I shortened the story as much as I could and still tell it...I love fish tanks, I always did.

When I was a little girl my uncle had a freshwater fish tank with angelfish in it. Whenever we went to visit I remember running to his tank to look at it.

When I was 15 (I lied and said I was 16) I got a job at Taco bell making $1.75 an hour. My first paycheck went for a 10g tank, when I got married I got two 30g long tanks. Years later when I moved from Chicago to Wisconsin, there was a fish store with a big 250g tank, the largest I had ever seen and full of corals.... I fell in love

I would go and visit that store all the time and just stare at that tank. Well years past, I had read allot of books but never had the cash to start up a saltwater tank and I was actually afraid to try. When we bought our house in Elkhorn Wisconsin I used a 55g freshwater tank as a room divider to separate the dining room from the living room.

We went to change our internet provider, and while there I spotted a tank with the lights off, I went to have a look. A guy came up behind me and said it was a beautiful reef when the lights are on but he was tearing it down, and wanted to know if I wanted the rock, he would give it away for free but wanted money for the lights.

I gave away my freshwater fish and converted my 55g to saltwater all on the promise of free live rock. 55g just wasn’t big enough, so I upgraded to a 75g…then upgraded to a 90g..Then I found SWF.com and all the helpful folks here…I have had to relearn some things, I have discovered allot of new things and found a kind of family in the mix…life is good.

lordy, I ask this question every few months....but really... About 12 years ago we were at the Tampa aquarium. They had a tank of really "pretty" fish and many clowns. Our daughter (about 4 at the time) said I like that fish (clowns) and I will name him Bozo. The rest is as they say... history

Growing up I always remember there being a tank at the house of some kind, FW or SW. We had a 'wild' tank (in addition to my Dad's tanks), we would ride our bikes to the jetty and catch fish, fill up a bucket and bring them home. Snappers, jacks, blueheaded wrasses, a think a parrotfish or two... Never lived long on FW flakes and the tiny 29gal tank, but we were dumb kids. My Dad had a buddy that started up a LFS/tank service company, and needed some assistance, so my Dad went in till he could pay his share back. So I've always had/been around a tank my whole life, so having them now that I'm on my own, just seems natural.

I've been interested in animals since I was really young but something about the water has always just resognated with me, I've been to many aquarium and always dismissed the fresh water and went straight for the salt there is more color, larger beasts, the mysteriousness of the deep sea, and way more diversity or more importantly more diversity in crustaceans! FW is just too brown for me and it's IMO tacky due to all of the ceramic crap they make that can be placed in fish bowls and tanks, I just don't like it

Now there was only ever one fish store near me as a kid and they were more of pet store to tell the truth, but anyways, they only really had FW. So what to get? "Mmmmm nothing is really cool..............mmmmmmmmmm....... WHAT!?!?!?! FRESH WATER CRABS!?!??! So I got 3 fiddlers, but I couldn't just have crabs (according to the parents
) so what to get what to get.... mmmmmmmm...... how bout 1 albino and 1 green aquatic frogs? yeah that makes sense, little kid logic hahaha." Well time goes on and then I had an empty fish bowl, by the way I'm probably 10 at the time, flash forward I'm 17 and now have my Jeep FREEDOM!!!!

So I start to push out of the local areas and I notice some shops but never go in. Flash forward, I end up going back to the local fish shop during the summer for a bunch of feeder fish for a kid's carnival game for a camp that I work at. Basically it's beer pong but you win a fish instead of pulling cups
While I'm there I notice some salt stuff but everything looks kind of baren or unhealthy, I walk up to the counter to pay for the feeders and then I see two things 1st thing is a 12g JBJ Nano-Cube on the counter with two Black Ocellaris and bunch of shrooms, gsp, and some zoas. HOLY CRAP!!! So I ask how much for that tank? I'm told $200 to take the tank out the door, I couldn't believe how cheap it was, I was thinking it was going to be around $500 for just the tank. Next thing I notice is a really small tank, probably a 1 gallon with just a bubbler and a desk lamp for lighting. It only had sand with maybe 5 hermit crabs in it and a sticky note reading "Saltwater is easier then you think! Just Ask!". I stared at that thing for about 5 minutes simply amazed on how cool it was even though it was so simple. I went home and talked about getting a tank for a month and forgot about it, probably because I realized I didn't have the money for it, another year goes by. I go to the local fish shop again for feeders for the summer camp and see the 12g and fall in love all over again, talk about it for a month and then forget about it. Yep again.

Another year goes by, I'm 19 years old and go to the LFS again, same reason. See the tank and say you know what I'm doing it this time it is just too awesome but I'm doing research. So I do some research and discover the larger sizes, go back to the LFS but they just have that one 12g. Well hey how bout those other stores? I go there and my mind was blown and I mean like a freaking small thermal nuclear device goes off in my head. WOW!!! I probably looked around in this one LFS for 2 hours in the livestock section alone, finally I move onto the dry goods and tanks and see the bio-cubes and nano-cubes all going for great prices. I go home to do research and decide on a 24g, I then go to the library and pick up some books, do some reading and head back to the ULTRA LFS I ask a lot of questions and I mean a lot and kind of waiver on sizes for a bit but stick with the JBJ 24g. I buy the thing, and am ecstatic about it. 4 weeks of letting water sit in my tank with the pumps and lights on with LS then I started my diary with the purchase of my two clowns, some hermits, some astreas, and my torch. Since then I've been rocking it as a nano reefer and loving every second of it

I've had freshwater tanks off and on for better than 40 years. Over that span there isn't a lot of time with no tank. I had tried a saltwater tank back in the late 70's and that didn't work out too well. At the time the store had a reef display and while the stuff in there was stupid expensive I always wanted to try it. After being disabled I set up a freshwater tank for something to do and got bored pretty quick. Decided to go for a reef, had the time, had the money. Of course I haven't had a tank up for a year and a half due to the move but the new system is just about ready to haul in. Just waiting for the new livingroom furniture to show up before I haul the stuff in from the garage.

I had freshwater tanks for much of my life. In the mid 70's I was just finishing my Ph.D., and had some time on my hands when a lfs opened down the street from my apartment. I started working there part time while I wrote my dissertation. The owners wanted to establish a marine section, but couldn't understand the technicalities of water chemistry and microbiology that saltwater requires, so they asked me to take a look at it since my degree was going to be in animal physiology. It became a successful part of the store, and when I left a few months later they gave me a complete 55 gallon set up as a going away present. I haven't been without a marine tank since.

The tank was on sale ;)

But seriously, I have always wanted a saltwater tank. My dad used to have one when I was little and he used to always take me to the aquarium. It's one of the few memories I have of him. I had a small freshwater tank I set up for my little brothers and that I did everything because you know how kids are. I started looking into saltwater stuff and it all just seemed too expensive so I adopted a "go big or go home" attitude. I was leaving for college and knew I'd be moving every year at least twice a year. I just graduated and the pet supply store I go to decided to try out selling fish so all the fish equipment was on sale. I got everything really cheap. I was going to hold off a bit longer since I expect another move in 3 years (hopefully my last one!), but I kind of got tired putting off the things I love in life so I said forget it and started cycling. I don't think I'll ever get a huge tank like my dad had, but somehow taking care of my four little buddies makes me feel closer to him. Idk maybe I picked an incompatible tank because my dad was insane and kept things like piranha and small sharks and some mean crazy fish. ><

Well my dad got me interested in saltwater by telling me stories when he had big moray eels. So for my b-day he got me my first tank. Then he comes home with a 29 gallon biocube and I said "Dad you said you would get me a 75". But I have right now my 29 g. I'm happy!!

When I was little all I ever had were sea-monkeys

You kids are sooooo lucky these days that your parents are willing (and financially) able to help you set up SW tanks..

My kids had hermit crabs....LOL....

I started with a 16 gallon freshwater tank because I was a manager of the live pet department where I work. I figured if I was giving advice on how to take care of a tank I should own one. I became bored of the tank since I see the fish on a daily basis and decided to convert the 16 gallon to salt. I outgrew the 16 quickly and got a 55.

I have had freshwater fish ever since I was old enough to make money working on my Dad's and Uncle's farms. I had a 40 gallon set up in college bought an Oscar about 2 inches long, he was 12 inches when i graduated. He was fun at parties. I got out of FW fish for a few years then my son came along. I set up my 40 again and then bought a 25 for him for goldfish. We started going to this LFS about 1/2 an hour away from us, they have a 6 foot long reef tank that we would stand in front of and just admire. Then one day my son said let's get a SW tank. So I bought him a 65 gallon for christmas, loving the hobby and really enjoy this forum. I did buy the tank for him, he does enjoy it. Just set up a 5 gallon for him. I think I will be in this hobby for a long time I have 3 FW tanks, goldfish pond and the two SW tanks. Thinking about a 200 gallon next!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love animals we have two dogs, 20 pound rabbit, three chickens, and i want to get some birds next (any suggestions out there).
