Why did you decide to setup a saltwater aquarium?

I am currently taking a speech class and I've decided to do my persuasive speech on why to setup a saltwater aquarium vs. freshwater.
So I need some input from you all!

Why did you decide to take the plunge and setup a saltwater aquarium?
Thanks in advance everyone!!

Because I had too much money and I needed to burn some of it in the bottomless vortex that is saltwater fish keeping...
Seriously though, because I wanted the challenge of a saltwater aquarium, while being able to keep something really cool looking (more color than freshwater, more options).

Challenging, more colors, and not to mention the tank is ever changing..

Thanks!

Im setting mine up this week after around 8 months of research but the reason I wanted to set one up is because of the fact there are way more colors in saltwater vs freshwater and the fact that its more challenging and it builds responsibility.

I walked into the fish store and thought, "Gee I wonder what type of gray fish I can buy today?" The next time I walked into the fish store it was to find out how to set up a saltwater aquarium.

Saltwater fish are def. more colorful, intersting, and who couldn't resist having a piece of the ocean in the comfort of their own house?

Lex, you are too funny! Great color is a definite plus, but also because of the amazing variety of animals that can be kept in a saltwater aquarium (shrimp, coral (all sorts), crabs, snails, fish, anemonies, etc. vs freshwater (fish, fish, fish or more fish ~ maybe some snails if you want to be overrun and the occassional crayfish (if you don't like your fish)).

the variety of life forms and colors are endless. even as a kid back in the
60`s
i always enjoyed watching the Jacque Cousteau (sp) tv shows
and the wild kingdom shows that was about marine life

good luck on your speech ...

Great point! Fish, Fish and more fish is about the extent of FW tanks.

I have spent that past couple years working with them in a store environment. So I figured why not tear down one of your 5 freshtanks and torture yourself with a salty. I get a discount on my supplies and creatures. I cant imagine paying full price.
All in all its been fun so far. in the process of starting a second salt tank for softies.

Because I wanted to go broke, but in a way that no one would understand (with the exception of the people on this board).

I agree with the idea saltys are more colorful, but there are alot more than fish in the fresh water world. Bamboo/flower shrimp, clams, devil crabs etc...
they are not as colorful but equally as interesting. Plus freshwater fish are easy to breed which is always a rush.

It must be nice to get a discount on all supplies and all of the other SW creatures!
I would LOVE to work at one of my not so close LFS's.... :( unfortunatly I have a ton of school work, and its an hour from where I live and with gas prices the way they are I'd spend more in gas to get there than I would have to purchase fish, coral etc..

Point made my friend, I must concure ~ guess I was referring to my 15 FW tanks (very colorful ~ African cichlids), but all just fish! You're right though, the breeding is indeed a rush.

I had several fresh water tanks so when i went to the lfs for fresh water fish, i found myself looking at the salt water instead. I finally realized i needed a salt tank, eventually i changed to all salt tanks.

HAHAHA we didn't intend to get into saltwater. We went to a pet store to get a 5 gallon FW tank for our girls and 2 hours later we walked out with a 55g SW+stand+everything needed and the 5 gallon FW
Then we started studying. We had the empty stand/tank sitting in our livingroom for a good while before we dived in and actually filled it up.
