Why did you decide to setup a saltwater aquarium?

I JUST got done cycling my first SW... a 55g and I made the HUGE mistake of reading some of these posts to my wife...... She is now rethinking letting me keep the thing. :( I would buy her something to make her forget about all the $$ I am about to spend but that would take away from my SW fish $$$.

flowers are not very expensive. i Just buy some every week or to when im at the grocery store, she stays happy i buy more corals and what not

Start out with flowers and then move up to taking her to the store and letting her help pick out critters... now my fiance allows purchases for the tank as long as I can spare the money.

I thought that having 'Nemo' in the office waiting room would be a great distraction for children and adults alike. Started with a 72 bow in the office.
Now have a large reef system with sump/refugiums in the office and two at home along with Qt's.......Man, how did it get so out of hand!?!

My wife and I used to live in Florida and working for the army we are now in missouri.. We both love the OCEAN and now not being able to walk out our door and see it we want it back !!
We always talked about setting one up but it was always a cost issue. We had almost bought one several times over the years but found somethign else to do with it instead.
So I was hitting some pet stores while my wife was in surgery and went to pick her up. They said keep her from driving walking talking blah blah blah and oh ya no decission making. I took her to the fish store and while she was drugged up ( i asked her about it in the car she said lets go high on the meds I guess. ) I walked out 800 bucks lighter and had a tank delivered before she got home from work the next day.

To tell you the truth, I got involved in saltwater purely by accident. My brother was eccentric when it came to saltwater. He took an interest in the hobby because he had an appeal toward the exotic. If it was flashy or "cool" he would have it. He got his first saltwater tank by swapping an engine job (he was an auto mechanic) for a new tank. The owners also supplied him with some fish and a book to learn by. He was impatient though and wouldn't take the time to do it right. He bought new fish and simply threw them in without acclimating and he mixed species which are totally incompatible. He had a very poor success rate of keeping fish. He didn't let that stop him though. He kept finding more exotic fish to fill his unending thirst for the next best thing.
In 2002 he was killed in a car accident. Like all things, he wanted the best and the fastest. I took it on myself to rescue his tank as his wife was unable to take this responsibility on with her 2 kids. I adopted his tank and began reading the book that he had worn thin. At the time, I didn't have any interest in fish keeping. But as an honor to him, I felt I needed to give it a try.
I am interested in the sciences and especially chemistry. As I read more about the tank I had inherited, I realized there was a lot more to keeping a tank than "baby sitting". There was a lot of chemistry involved. This I was good at. So I developed a genuine interest in the hobby purely by accident. I wouldn't have gotten involved in saltwater if it weren't for my brother's undying thirst for the next best thing.

Well, lolol, Kind of actually a funny story.
A long time ago when I worked at Sears and was on strait commission from selling appliances, I earned one of my largest paychecks. It was around $2,800.00 (for two weeks it's not bad lol) and my wife and I were in the pet store just looking to look. I had actually no intention of buying anything, let a lone a SW setup. I actually never even thought about ever having one in my entire life. So as we are walking through this horrible run down LFS I happen to see this 55 gallon tank COVERED in green hair algae and horrid Diatom problems, with bad PC lighting. I fell in love with the lunar wrasse and their Snowflake eel they had displayed in the tank. I said to my wife we have to get one of these. And in about 30 minutes I walked out of the store with one 45 gallon corner, 30 lbs of LS 30Lbs of LR, 1 volitan lion, one percula. I had to at that moment be one of THEE most under educated Salt water fish hobbyists out there.
It's funny how such an UGLY tank got me into this amazing hobby.

Freshwater tanks are to easy, and get to boring...not enough color and really can only get fish and that is about it!

Buy her some crack. After that, she'll start to understand the necessities of addiction

My son wanted saltwater fish. I never liked freshwater, so I gave saltwater a small try with a 12g first, but I'm definitely addicted to the reef now and have moved on to a rather large tank. I have tons more coral than fish, but the fish are great too.
