Why do we do this at stoplights?

Well, we have gotten away from the political threads, and gotten more towards the random threads, so heres a weirdy, but goody!
Your stopped at a stoplight, the person in front of you moves up 6", and there is an unfight-able urge to also move forward 6"............I do this too, im not bad mouthing "you people".
I have tried before to not move up just a bit whenever the person in front of me does, but i can hardly seem to make it through the light without doing it

Anyone else do this? just curious

guilty.

I have a hard time not racing the people next to me, too. Even if they're old. The other day there was this old grey haired man in a bmw next to me and I gassed it hard. The old dude floored it and blasted past my Toyota in his M5.

Courtesy perhaps? Sometimes when traffic is bad and cars are blocking driveways it's kinda rude to just block them in if you can scoot up a bit and give them room to go.
I hate it when people stop a car length away from the car in front of them. Especially when it's blocking me from exiting a parking lot.

I just split the lanes and move to the front anyway.
Traffic doesnt count when you ride a bike.
oh, you're that type. i hate bike drivers like you. thinkin they can zip thru traffic and nobody is screaming "Wait your FN turn!" at them. i dont hate you, i hate the way you go thru traffic.

Guilty too and I don't drive a sports car any longer, but a big a$$ Burb. I can't get rid of that habit. I know it's not very becoming, especially for a woman.
Another of my bad habits is driving on the leftmost lane and cursing at everybody who is slower in my lane.

One of my pet peeves is if im in the car with someone. The light is red and the person driving the car keeps going up a few inches and I hate when ppl do it to me lol

I go around looking to pick races.. hahahaha... I'm about embarassing old men with 20-something girlfriends in their stock viper or whatever...
Nothing like a reasonable QUIET 10.40 car rolling up next to you at the light. Granted my car is SLOW as piss if I have to leave off idle (powerband on motor is 4200-7500 and 3400-7500 on spray)...
03 mach1, heads, cams, ported/shortened intake manifold, LOTS of gas (nitrous), built shortblock, gear, suspension 275/40/17 ET STREET RADIAL in the back... The car has been lightened up a bit. My exhaust isn't that loud especially for longtubes, offroad x, but probably because I run the standard magnaflow mufflers out back.

I love it. To me, that's one less car in front of me at the light. What gets on my nerves is when they lane split then accelerate like molasses in January while swerving between both lanes so nobody can pass.

Speaking from the bikes point of view....
Splitting lanes IS legal.
Moving in to cut me off or do the fake open-the-door scare move and you get your mirror knocked off or a door kicked in.
I agree that people on bikes that cut to the front but then are slow to take off make us all look bad.

I ususally inch up, but nobody gets moving right away. Last year the person behind me did a little more than inch up and slammed right into me. I was pretty pissed...

it is legal in some places to lane split...but not everywhere unfortunately...i wish it was legal here i would feel a little safer stopped at a light...there was a guy from california that moved here trying to take it to state legislation to be legalized...

ILLEGAL here and sorry to tell you but people that do this make all rule abiding bikers look bad.

Greetings

I'd be curious to know why "lane splitting" is legal anywhere. It seems to me that the tactic would present a host of potential dangers. For one, if I am sitting at a light, I am probably not going to be thinking about someone in a motorcycle sneaking alongside me. I would never intentionally open the door, or dive into the adjacent lane in front of a bike, but it could certainly happen by accident. What is the benefit of allowing a motorcycle to pass all stopped traffic and go to the head of the line? Seeing that happen at times (very seldom - must be illegal in Indiana [guessing]...), it only serves to piss me off. If I have to wait on the light, shouldn't everyone else - two wheels or four???
This will likely anger one of the previous posters, but I intentionally leave a little room between my front bumper and the car in front of me. I was taught (and it seemed to make sense) to leave enough room to maneuver the car out of the lane and take off. If the car in front stalls, or if someone decides they want to car-jack you, you at least have the room to get out. I try not to block anyone in when doing so, though...
Take Care

hey guys i ride and i occasionally lane split, illegally.
right now it is only legal in california.
reasons why it is legal, in no particular order:
1) 2 motorcycles can ride side by side in the same lane without being harassed by police.
2) motorcycles are considered low-impact vehicles. they barely use gas , and they are small. this why they are allowed in the HOV lanes at all times. (these are the extra lanes that are reserved for carpooling like in florida).
3) if a few bikes in the traffic flow scoot up to the front of the line, and then take off before the first car can even roll 5 feet, then the traffic flow rate is increased, more cars make it though the intersection, and more gas is conserved.
you guys only "hate" it because you wish you could skip the line yourselves. that is called jealousy. maybe somebody with a loud pipe (most likely a harley) buzzed you and it startled you, or you felt like they were so close it could have been an accident.
i personally will do it occasionally for various reasons, but usually the number one reason is personal safety. people in cages always want something to do with you when on a bike. if it is just to talk to you for no reason and compliment, or want to race you , or drive close to you, etc.... if you get up in front of the line and get ahead of the pack, you are worlds safer then being stuck in a pack of coffee drinking, breakfast eating, makeup applying, cell phone gabbing and otherwise totally oblivious drivers.
i wont do it if the cars are too close and i cant get there comfortably. and of course is there a cop.

Well, in theory, creeping up when stopped is good for your car. If you come to a hard stop and just sit on your brakes, you have the potential to warp your brake rotors. That section of rotor still squeezed by the brake caliper doesn't get a chance to 'cool off' after the hard stop like the rest of the rotor.
As for bikes going to the front, I don't have a problem with it in theory, but it presents a couple safety concerns. First, would obviously be flying past unsuspecting cars. No idea if the guy in the car is going to change lanes, turn, etc. Then, where exactly is the motorcyclist going to go? Most of the time the cars are all the way up to the stop line. Having the motorcycle pull up in the pedestrian crosswalk isn't exactly a good idea, have the people walking forced into the intersection to go around the bike.
There also a bit of gray area. Which bikes can go to the front? I had a guy on a little scooter go to the front at every light. The problem is his little toy couldn't even do the speed limit. After the I third light, I have not idea what held me back from running his little *** over.
