Why does everyone like Southdown sand?

Yes they do. Mostly silica playsand and those that are calcium carbonate based like Southdown, Yardright and Old Castle playsands.
What do you think your glass tanks are made out of?
Southdown has a variety of grain sizes that make a very good mix for a sand bed, and since it is ootlic, aragonite, cheap, and the fact that it is a bright white in the tank, it is the prize that many seek to keep cost down, and have a beautiful substrate.

after you get it into you tank... i suggest populating it with all of the beneficial creatures found on the reef (well at least a small portion of them)

Good info Kip! Since I'm upgrading the 28 to the 55 all the existing sand will come over too. I will need to add a lot of sand to get the bed to 5-6 inches. Any ideas on who carries Southdown in the Southern New Jersey area?

I guess it is volcanic since it's black and has a shine to it. It says "safe for mairine and fresh water aquariums" but that doesn't mean much. :notsure:
