Perhaps he thought he could make it to the drain?
Sorry for your loss. I haven't had much luck with clowns. I've lost 3. 1 to a PH, 1 shouldn't have came home with the wife from the LFS and the final to brookynella.

Sometimes fish jump. I've had it happen twice. Sometimes it's because someone or something in the tank startles them. It's an instinct reaction...and then they find themselves on the floor. Other times...who knows. One solution is some sort of cover on the tank. Either a canopy or egg-crate (to keep ventilation going.)
Sorry you lost your Clown, but why did you give away the other one? She would have adjusted eventually. Or you could have tried to pair her up again in a little bit.

I know how you feel, I was moving some rocks around in my tank the day my clown jumped and I'm afraid I might of spooked him and that's why he jumped.

puffer9006 "egg crate" refers to a piece of latticed plastic usually found as a panel for a florescent light cover found in the big orange home improvement store in the aisle where you find the flourescent ceiling light cover panels....its just a white plastic grid, that can be used for just about anything in this hobby.

I had a pair and 1 jumped out also. I was upset but it has been awhile now and his buddy is doing just fine he lives in my hammer head. I loved having a pair but that's the way it goes sometimes. I also have gone to the eggcrates just to be safer.
