Why won't they host?

I have a pair of false Ps in my 46 with a green bubble tip. The Anemone has been in there for over a week and they haven't gone near it. The bigger clown was hosting a carpet Anemone in a friend's tank less than a month ago. Any way to get them host? Do they take a while sometimes?

Their host anemones are not bubble tips and they are not the smartest fish around. They dont call them clownfish for nothing.. lol. It can take as little as hours to as long as a year before an anemone fish takes residence in an anemone. And still there is a chance it may never happen.

Well i don't have the lights for any other Anemone. If i decided to trade outmy clowns, which species likes the bubble tip?

FWIW, If you have anything less than HO T5's on that tank then you also dont have enough light for your BTA, dispite what your LFS might have told you.

I had the same problem with ocellaris and percula's... they would never go near my bubble tip. I went to the LFS and traded my bubble tip for a long tentacle anemone and it was barely in the tank a minute when they all fled to it and hosted it almost imeediately. i have two tanks, and in both instances, the perculas and ocellaris went right to the long tentacles...
From my experience, I think certain clowns prefer certain anemones.

This is very true, but tank bred clownfish may never host anenome's no matter what kind is in the tank. They just don't know how to do it.

Not true. After owning a shop/store that brought in a few wild clownfish over the years, and after breeding 5 different species, I dont find that the wild clowns host any quicker. In fact just the opposite.
Yes it is hit and miss with any species and the length of time before accepting a host can vary. And certain species of anemones are natural hosts for certain clowns, and others are not natural... There are many factors that can come into play, but Tank bred has very little influence either way. My main breeders are percs, and you wouldnt believe how often I hear " Hey the clowns that I got from you dove right into my anemone" I have seen it myself on 100s of occasions. . When a trio (2 clowns /anemone) would leave my shop, the clowns would often find the anemone in the bucket, before the bucket even made it out the front door, and often before I could even get a lid in the bucket.

Good post. Matches my experience as well (except for the owning a store part).

I do have T5 HOs. I believe that it is fine for the green BTA. I was just saying that I don't have halides, so no carpet anemome or rose BTA.

That is why I said may
never host. I have had very bad luck with tank bred clowns....tomato, cinnamons. I have purchased twice tank bred clowns and none of them wanted anything to do with the bta that was in the tank. They seemed perfectly happy with the torch or frogspawn. This is not what I wanted. Traded both in ( these were bought at two different times) and bought a wild cinnamon and within minutes the clown was hosting the bta. I am sure that you have had one at least that would not host. Not all is equal, or one size fits all kind of motto. I just happened to get two. Bad luck maybe, but am sticking with wild if I want them to host. As I am sure others have had the opposite. If not meant to host then tank bred is fine for me. This is just my findings. I am all for tank breeding clowns and other saltwater fish....maybe I just got the dumb ones.
