Widescreen Laptop

I just got a Sony VAIO widescreen laptop, thinking that it would actually be "widescreen". However, the internet window is just standard and leaves a couple of inches on either side blank. This is disappointing. Is this normal for widescreens? Or is there an adjustment? :needhelp:

Have you checked to see what the resolution options are for the display? When you say it leaves a couple inches blank on each side, can you see the desktop behind it? When you don't have an internet window open, does the desktop fill up the whole screen?

No, there are 2 inches on either side that is basically black....nothing on the screen. I've played with the resolution, and no change. I tried dragging the screen to enlarge. NO.
Is widescreen only for widescreen DVDs? This is very disappointing.

Should have bought a Mac.
Anyways, when you just boot up the laptop and it comes to the desktop, is it widescreen then? You may have answered that, just wanted to clarify.
Not sure if its only for DVDs or not, I haven't used a PC widescreen laptop, just a Mac Powerbook.

Beth,
I have a 17" widescreen Toshiba laptop and I don't have that problem. I set the resolution to 1440 X 900 which is a widescreen resolution. You should not have the bars.

duh....just needed to play with the resolution. Nice laptop, I have to say. Came close to getting the toshibia which really looked nice too. But, I'm basically a sony-person.

Sony makes a very nice laptop. Their technical support can be a pain though for warranty work. Enjoy. I don't even turn on my desktop any longer.

Well, I won't go that far. I love my 21" screen sony too much to stop using the desktop. But I am traveling a lot for work now, so I need to have a mobile.

I hate you Beth. No sooner had I posted about my laptop to you that it froze up and died. Hardware failure with display. It does not work any longer. Taking it in tomorrow. Thank God it is under warranty.

I'm upstairs on my desktop now. Man was I ever spoiled with my laptop. It sucks up here.

sony's are nice, but overpriced for what they offer. I am a fan of HP. Duel Cores are out now.. everyone go buy one! since gateway was bought out by emachines their comps are pretty cheap, and you get a whole lot of computer. just dont buy dell please

do not get alianware.. pretty nice, but way to costly... for 3 G's i would just build an uber desktop. Toshibas are pretty sweet. I'm in love with the new ultrabright screens.

nothing wrong with an alienware at all... you get what you pay for
Top of the line parts built rock solid.
You dont have to spend "3g's" for an alienware laptop. I did but that is because it smokes any desktop ive seen lately in the same price range.
3.6 ghz HT P4
2 gigs dual channel ram
dvd / cd burner
17" UXGA clearview LCD
gforce 6800 ultra
120mb raid configuration
integrated wireless...
for the price i paid my machine is gonna kick. plus i bought the 3 year warranty with it.

i had bad experience with alienware. ever since then i just build my own, mimicing alienware's design. saves 30%

its nice no doubt. but that machine could be built on a desktop for much less. also, im not much of a pentium guy, More of an AMD.
It all comes down to what your going to use it for. I dont see much purpose in gaming with a laptop, so I would just spend money on a desktop. But yes alianware does make nice machines, I just feel they are overpriced. But if your happy with it who am I to tell you otherwise.
Best Buy had a duel core AMD with a gig of ram and 200 gig HD for $820. Wish i had the cash on hand to buy it.
