it is just the top and bottom "lips" that flash. I used to have one but unfornayely he only lasted about six months. This is the best pic i have of him. You can see the blue streak on the top "lip"

Electric scallops or just the flame scallops? Electrics usually go for $20. The price you stated sounds just right for the flam scallop.

It was the electric ones I looked at them and they are the same thing as in the pic "they were from pet warehouse" They were the only 2 things in the tank.

i feed my electric flame scalop fine filter food and spot feed him, it was my udnerstanding that phytoplanton is too large for him.
i have had mine for about 4 months and is doing great!
the eletric or neon is more pulsating than constant. it would appear as though it uses it to shock or dirupt its food to eat it.
but i am not a marine biologist!

Hey calylove, at least look on the brightside. At least your wife didn't buy anything crazy like a gonipora or another fish (like a big tang or something). Plus, she got the right food for the thing too.

I know, she actually did alright, both are really cool. Im just worried about my snowflake eel that was already acting weird and still is. I think hes overwhelmed with all the new tenants. But your right, she def could have done worse.

Like I posted in another post, test your salinity. If you are using a hydrometer, see if you can get your lfs to test it with a refractometer. That is how I found out there was a problem in my tank. Everything was doing so well in my tank, except for my lion. He refused to eat everything. Turns out, my salinity was extremely low.

Unfortunately, flame and "electric" scallops are poor additions to a tank and rarely survive more than a year. Most starve to death, even if "spot fed." This takes time, so success under a year is not a good indication of how well they will do. In some tanks they do live longer but this is not the norm, I am afraid. Furthermore, they will move where they want and should be left wherever they go. Trying to remove them can damage them. So don't be surprised if they end up behind your rocks.
What kind of star is it? All brittlestars should be spot fed. The green is a known predator, and MAY pose a threat to shrimp and small fish, though not for sure. I would talk about acclimation, but it is probably too late.

one year... in an experts tank perhaps,Those scallops are very very hard to care for especially if you have any oppurtunistic peppermint shrimp.

You can go to Walmart to the kitchen dept. They have a small baster that you could use to squirt the food into the scallop. A friend of mine uses one for her tank. Works great.

Rob Toonen wrote an excellent article some time ago on the care of flame scallops. You should be able to find reference to it by searching google. They require very specific care.

What about the flame scallop "kinda diffrent" but kinda the same are they very hard?

Both flame scallops and these "electric scallops" are considered equally difficult to keep, and require a great deal of care from the hobbyist to provide a daily diverse diet of phytoplankton and zooplankton. Unfortunately these animals eat food in a specific size range and that is one thing that makes them difficult to keep, and it usually takes many many months for them to starve to death which gives the impression they are doing "OK" during that time.

I have one on the way "flame scallop" and I guess I will just have to cross my fingers and hope for the best. I have a great job around $11 an hour and I dont have any bills "im only 17" so I can provide what is needed for it.
