OMG! You got one!! She looks awesome. Can you get a side shot with her fins kind of close to her body?
I will try my best. I know you have one, any tips for taking pics with a bowfront? Seems like if the camera is not dead on-straight, it will distort the image (like the last one in reply #16). I only have a PnS, FWIW....

Will this one work? Or with the pect. opened up less? I will try again after dark, as you can see the window light is hurting focus...

Thanks! Comments much appreciated.
I have learned so far that the lion is a little piggy
Having 3 Butterflies in the same tank, one of which is a corallivore, means they get feed a lot, and it has been interesting trying to limit her food intake. As of tonight she eats anything that lands on the bottom, clams, scallops, etc. She showed interest in some too large silversides, meant for the trigger, but thankfully decided against it. I've since have attached the silversides to the Magfloat for the trigger, and can feed the lion smaller pieces off the skewer (didn't realize but you can see the silverside and the lion in the Crosshatch pic)

So if she is just under 7 inches, there is no chance of her turning male, correct? Does there need to be another female present for one to turn male? They typically turn at about 7 inches don't they?
Great pics BTW.

I thought Crosshatches turn male at 5". If it's 5" or more, then it is what it is. You can't turn a female into a male or the other way around, like clown fish. At least that's my understanding.

Here is what I know....All small Crosshatch are females, not sure, but I think the 5 inch is right as for when they typically turn male. Not sure if they can still turn at a larger size (like I believe Anthia's can). I.E. if you have 1 male Crosshatch with 2 females, and the male dies, would one of the females turn male? I believe with Anthia's that can happen.

I've read and read, and still haven't found anything concrete. My previous personal opinion was that they are born with a determined şex (unlike say clownfish), they just didn't develop sexual dichromatism till around 5". There are a few threads by some knowledge people on R¢ that suggest in nature a female can turn male if the harem needs it. Usually it's the more dominant female, so if anything a larger female would be the one to change over
. My personal experience has only been with male/female Xhatch pairs, both stayed şex. So this will be an interesting documentation, if ours should turn into a goregous full male, I had no issues
. If you want I can PM you the links.
So I wonder if we parlay all that together, the running theory is that are going to be the gender they are, unless conditions demand otherwise. Is a single female Crosshatch in an aquarium enough to cause that (with a Lei trigger)?. I think that's the question.
About the size, I think like Blue Jaws, only around 5" they 'develop' their color. Yea, some probably develop their color younger or older then norm. However I'm not sure you saw flameangels88 thread over there, but he bought a DD BlueJaw pair, definite male/female, and the female had since changed over to male.

My understanding is that Corsshatches are sort of like Naso Tangs. They're born with a specific gender but you can't tell them apart until they're 5+ inches and the coloration starts to change. Or in the case of the Naso, when the streamers start to grow.

Well... your lion is a girl.

That's pretty cool. How do ya tell? Stripe # on the pectorals?
I'm gonna have to start testing for estrogen in that tank, female Butterfly, female X-hatch, female lion

That is/was my opinion as well. However the new bit about them being able to change to male is quite interesting.

Her pectoral fins don't go down past the area where the tail fin joins the body. In males it goes down longer than that. Your also right about the fin stripes. Up to 6 are female. Even though she's not full gown, you can tell that her head is not going to be very big. Males have a larger head.
