Worst thing you have heard from your LFS

I am curious, I know we have all been give bad advice from one LFS or another. I would like to hear the insane things people have tried to tell you to part you from your money. I'll add a couple just to get it going.
"There is no such thing as cycleing a salt water tank, The fish will adapt to your water conditions no matter what they are if you float them for 45 minutes and then just dump the bag in water and all."
So many things wrong with that i don't even know where to begin. Needless to say That was the first and only time i have ever been to that store.
"If your nitrates are high the best way to bring them down is add a fish or two."
How does that even make sence?

Two, both were told to me.
"Most people add fish after a day or two of starting their tank"
And the typical: "Yellow tang fine for you're 29gal!"

New to saltwater when I was setting up my first tank...It was a 55 gallon. I asked about a Scopas tang they had for sale. The LFS guy said the Scopas would be fine in my 55 for its life!!!! That was just one of many from this store.
Another was..."yes you can add Cupramine to your tank for Ich it will not hurt anything at all." Even after I told them it WAS saltwater.

Cupramine is used to treat SW ich. Did he also tell you that you will never be able to have inverts in the tank and all of your LR will become base rock?

I was told that it's not necessary to acclimate inverts. Just throw them in.
personally I see nothing wrong with that I have been doing that for years. Float for 5min..maybe toss little my water in the bag then in they go..never lost anything
from Shrimp, Octopus, anemone, crabs, starfish. the whole acclimation thing to me is blown way out of proportion. I never lost a fish this way either.

hmm, the only bad thing i've heard from lfs's near me is "10.99/lb for live rock" or $30 for that aquacultured clown, $400 for those corallife PC lights and you can do just about any coral under it...
i did surprise one lfs last night when i asked him for the sediment off his live rock tank...i was looking at the bag later that night and found what i was hoping for. hundreds of copepods, dozens of bristle worms, and even some halimeda algae stuck to a couple small pieces of rubble rock.
i was surprised when he said no one had ever asked him for it before...

Providing that the LFS water and your waters chemistry is good this isnt completly false, minus adding their water to yours (big no no). There are a lot of things to consider when you add a fish to your tank and one of them is weather or not to add it directly to your tank, drip acclimate or exchange water.(after temp acclimating of course) Testing the bag water is recomended for pH, and salinity, but the major factor in decided which method to use is how long the fish have been in the bag for, coupled with the difference in readings between your tank water and the bag water. I could get a lot more detailed but..... you get the idea.
Although I doubt your LFS meant it in the way I explained....

I have heard a few... my favorite is one that is most often seen here too by the novice...
"Yes that anemone will do fine under flourscent lighting, look at it in our tank its fine."

"Sure you can put a scooter blenny in your cube tank, he'll be fine." "Ummm even if my cycle just completed?" "Yep, as long as your tank is cycled he will be ok, They dont live to long though just so you know"..............(ummmm yea thats because they freakin STARVE TO DEATH.) Yes we were all new to this at some point.....

i dont
all i have is a 14 bio cube.
would the pods live/breed in the dt?
pondering- i wonder if i can have pods survive in my middle chamber with the bio balls?
or- what if i put the macro algae in a net breeder on the back wall of the tank?

I have asked about tangs in my old 55 gallon tank, and they were happy to sell me everything! i always read about them first and knew they were wrong.
Ive had a guy i thought i trusted from one store give me some green powder to treat a parasite i had on my new clown. I told him i wouldnt be able to catch the clown, so he said " just add it all to the DT, it will be fine." so i did, and before i knew it i had neon green water, i freaked out! i had ugly water for days, and my parameters were everywhere. The medicine was for freshwater. I called and he said, sorry, it should be fine.
I was pretty frustrated with the people at that store. This was 4 months into my tank, im much wiser now!

I was once reprimanded and asked to leave by an lfs JUST because I didn't have any pants on. It was a hot day.

YIKES

That is actually common practice for many for raising the pH in cichlid tanks. You and the guy just misunderstood. He meant a dead coral, not a live one.
