Well here goes tang police..come and kill me and take my tank away from me...for I have sinned...I have had a mimic tang in my 26 gal now for over a year..no problem at all.She was very small when I got her but she has been the same size for a long time now..granted she has over 50 pounds of live rock in the tank..So I guess there are exceptions to every rule..and don't give me the.. but is she really happy crap..I don't think any of us have a single fish that would not be happier and probably better off in the ocean! So flame away..and I would say if you want a tang in a 55 go for it..of course I am not advising you to go and get a full grown naso tang and put in your 55.but with careful thought and waiting for the right "small" tang, you can enjoy it for a couple of years before you will need to upgrade..so what does Johnny Flame say....."FLAME ON" tang police..but be warned you are wasting your typing skills on this one to change my mind!!By the way this would be my 6th tank in about 6 years and I have had tangs in every one of them and never lost one yet...

You my friend are a complete moron. I wish the admin would ban people like you. It is improper advice and just the advice the newbies want to hear. a tang in a 26? If you want to do it, fine. However, please stop spreading your "advice". You are actually supposed to know something important before you open your mouth. Next time give it a try. This hobby is about proper procedure and consistency not hey look what I pulled off! Get a new hobby or atleast find some other place to spread your "theories"

thanks..just what i expected...Sorry to screw your thread up...because it will probably go like this for awhile. Just for you "team" once again you have no ideas about what I plan on for the near future or for this tank..just passing on my experiences..to each his own..

I dont care if you "plan" to get a 600 gallon tank. Get the proper fish for the tank you have until you get that future tank. If you want to keep a tang in a less than ideal environment, that is your prerogative. However, keep that information to yourself and don't encourage others to follow when you know very well it is improper procedure. And don't tell me it's not because if it wasn't you wouldn't have any "plans". Also, you knew the response you would get so why say anything? I ask everyone to ignore this minor lack of common sense and get back to the original post.

This is kind of funny... you brag about having 6 tangs in 6 tanks (I'm assuming small tanks), but your profile says you only have the 29 gallon now. OF COURSE YOU NEVER LOST A FISH, YOU DON'T KEEP ANY OF THEM LONG TERM!!

I think that new hobbyists are always going to get varied opinions on what is correct and on what can you get away with. It is up to our own personal values as to what we do. On this and the other boards though I think that most of the replies to this kind of question are going to be correct on the side of scientific fact about the question asked. We will always have the "I DID THIS AND IT WORKED SO NAH NAH NAH" crowd, but an intelligent person is going to see through that. All we can do is to keep answering question to the best of our ability with the knowledge we have learned from the scientific community and to hope that the few naysayers are not taken too seriously.

Anyone here actually have a 12" hippo? Or a 10"? So often I hear people say they'll get this size but I have never seen one that big except in the Georgia Aquarium or something. If you do have one, post a pic!

You can say it nicer than slamming it down on the person.
To be honest when I 1st started I wanted a Copperband Butterflyfish,but got ahold of myself....and got a 3-inch Regal Tang.And it was a 12-gallon nano
.Now I have a 125-gallon and still want that Copperband, and I have to wait until Wednesday
.Well anyway please be more polite your just going to start a war and have Admin ban both of you.

We have one that big at the LFS, I should take a picture of it and post it.
Wish I had a big enough tank for one

Then that should tell you there is an issue. If the fish is small and not growing it is not healthy.

Well I should rephrase my original question. Anyone had a hippo go from say 1" to 10"? Or anything close? I just personally haven't seen much fish growth so I'm just curious.

Don't you want your fish to be happy? How can a tag be happy in a 26 gallon cell? Kind of like locking up a person in a room the size of a bathroom and feeding them. They may not die, but what kind of life is it?

Yes, we did! Sorry no pics, but she was a tiny little thing and grew and grew and grew. I'd like to think that she'd be even bigger by now. Unfortunately, we lost her after we moved into our house. The stress must have been too much for her and we didn't move the tank properly as I have learned since coming to this site. Also, we would have been forced to find her a new home as we had only a 55 gallon tank and it was increasinglly becoming too small for her. So, yes, tangs will grow too big for a smaller tank. And yes, with proper feeding and care, they will grow to their estimated normal size. Our Dory was adorable and we miss her alot. Once again, lesson learned!
BTW, I was hesitant about posting this info about our tang, for fear of being bashed about a blue tang in a 55g, but felt I needed to share our improper mistake. We will not make the same mistake no matter how much I want another blue tang.

Could you elaborate any? Like what size was it when you got it and what size when it died? And how long did you have it? Thanks

Oh golly, you are asking me to remember 3 years ago and I can't hardy remember yesterday! Ha! She was just a tiny baby. Maybe half and inch. By the time she passed, she was possibly 7 inches or more. She got big...fast. Certainly not enough time to buy the bigger tank we dreamed of getting. As it stands we have only upgraded to a 90 right now, cause the 55 sprang a leak, or we'd still be with that tank. When ever we do go to 100+ or I want 200+, then we will get amother blue tang. Not before then.
Oh, and we had her less than 3 years.

The blue hippo in my tank was bought at less than 2" by my brother in law, (about the size of a silver dollar). He grew to about 6" in approximately 3 years and grew another 2" in the past year and a half since I've had him in my tank.

Here's what I've been told by numerous people and read in numerous places:
A tang that's a juvenile (about the size of a quarter) should be in a smaller tank for the first bit of their life and placed in larger tanks as they grow. Perhaps when they've reached 4 or 5 inches they'll be too big for a 55, but until then it might work out better. The key is to have an upgrade plan in place prior to doing this since you'll get attached to the fish and not want to give it up.
Again, that's what I've been told and read and I have no experience with tangs myself to back that up. But I don't know why people get so upset over this subject when the original poster or responders still have some sort of respect for the fish in mind.
