Would you like a fried lung with your cigarette?

That sounds like my dads favorite story about Uncle Sid, Ask anyyone how he died my dad would yell..go ahead ask. So I asked my mother how he died and she shook her head in sadness, he drank himself to death. My irrate father shaking all over from rage since I had just lectured him about drinking a case of beer a day said to my mom...Now tell her how old he was....she said..... 98.
We still laugh about that...My dad died 3 years ago, he was 78, of (COPD) emphysema
He quit smoking 10 years before, but it had already damaged his lungs. He drank that case of beer till his last few weeks when he couldn't feed himself anymore, because he was too weak.
I don't smoke and I won't buy or pay for anyones cigarettes, my sister asks all the time and I won't do it. I might have a Smirnoff ice twice a month. I think we all have stories like that.

I used to have 2-3 drinks, usually JB Black and diet Coke, once a week. Every Friday like clockwork. My back got a whole lot worse 2 years ago and I have pretty much quit going to the watering hole(BTW, Nick's Place was burned down in the fire. So now I can't go anymore. ): ). Since then I can't drink hardly anything ever. I still enjoy the thought of a JB Coke or a Long Island, but one sip and I get nauseated. So my weak stomach may help me live longer.

My Dad was 68. His one sister had diabetes and died shortly after he did, the other lived into her late 80's. His oldest brother is in his 90's and the other late 80's. Considering how much the old man drank, and how long he lived after being diagnosed I think he would have lived past 100 if he had quit before he got sick.
I think I got his health genes. Never get sick, no infections, even being severely overweight my blood sugar and cholesterol are in good range but I have mildly high blood pressure. If I can get this weight off I'd be doing great. If I could move I could lose weight and If I could lose weight I could move, it's a vicious cycle :)

Every male in my family has died between the age of 56 and 85 from alzheimers.....there is one exception, he lived to be 97:::::::.......smoked 2 packs of camel non filter cigs for 70 years.....died in his sleep peaccefully....so cancer is not my worry...losing my mind is.....
The women in my family all die from ovarian cancer, my moms generation. Will be the first to find out what kills them.....as all the women havehad their ovaries removed.

My cosmic twin. I don't even have the high blood pressure. Just arthritis, and I do have stomach acid problems from taking aspirin for so long, it also affected my blood platelets. My doctor wanted me off aspirin...I can't move without it. She gave me this cream stuff to rub on my joints, it works fine as long as I don't do anything...it takes the ache away otherwise.
She also recommended that joint vitamin (can't spell it) it doesn't help the bone to bone areas.
I had a massive heart attack when I was 22 because of some medication I was given when my son was born. To date I'm on no heart meds, and unless the heart specialist knew about my past he would not be able to find any damage at all. He said it was a tiny glitch in the beat that was so regular it would be missed.

When I was drinking regular, like 2 scotch rocks a night, I had an irregular heat beat. The docs weren't concerned about it. Most people have them but I am one of the few that can actually tell when it's happening. Cut out salt and caffine first as those were the most likely suspects. Finally about 6 months after I quit drinking it was gone. Now, even if I get blasted once in a while it's no issue. Doc said the sedentary life style was probably more the cause and the alcohol was just an additional irritant. About the time I stopped drinking I also get the big hot tube so I can work out weather permitting.
When I was in the wreck my left hip blew out the socket and crushed the ball at the end of the femer or whatever it's called to the point the left leg is 3/4 inch shorter than the other. It was far enough out that when they lifted me out of the truck the bone tore through all the nerves in my lower back, that was a golly gee swell fun moment. Anyway they decided it would be better to wait to do the hip replacement so they put me in traction for 2 months to let it heal best it could. The hip doc who's one of the top guys in the country told me I could go a year or so before the joint died and the pain got bad enough I'd need the replacement........ That was 11 years ago. Leg turns out sideways a bit and is a little too short but at least I don't have to worry about the fake hip loosening up or popping out of joint.

Or replacing it.....Good for you...for putting it off as long as possible, and maybe never really need it. I'm not a big fan of joint replacement, my mother had both knees done TWICE and my father had his hip done 3Xs. He had polio when he was born, so he had almost no hip by the age of 30. There is less and less to attach the next one to...in the end he could only stand leaning on the counter for about 10 minutes before he had to take a pain pill and go back to bed.
My mother is up and walking but certainly not as well as she should be able to. The first time was premature, she didn't wait to the last moment but jumped right in and had it done...Back then it only lasted 10 years, the second one, she didn't have enough muscle and tendons needed, so they pounded a metal rod into her thigh and at the age of 70 that's pretty scary, but the old joint was leaking some kind of black gunk into her leg from it breaking down...the new joint is supposed to last 20 years...So if she lives to 90 she will need another, I'm pretty sure she won't live through that again at such an age. Not only the pain of surgey but the rehab isn't any picnic either. Each time gets worse and harder to attach.
Someday you might need a new hip joint, and who knows how long the doctors can make those new joints last...... and maybe you will only have to have it done once for a whole lifetime. At least you will have plenty of muscle and tendons to attach it without too much trouble, and rehab that first time isn't half as bad as the second and third.

What the bone doc back in Montana told me was even if I wasn't a wide body I am 6'5" so even if I were skinny it's a lot of weight for those joints to support. He just said the longer I waited the more advances they would make in the replacements and better my chance of only going through it once. He also mentioned having the joint fused. Don't like that idea but he said the guy he knew that did it was a cop and if you watched him walk you'd never guess one of his hips didn't move. My question was what happens if you fall wrong or get in another accident. "Well, yeah, probably a broken femur bone". NO THANK YOU.

Well one thing is for sure...Glad you are still here with us today, because it sounds like some horrific accident. Nothing will ever work as good as the original parts.
I would love to live to see the day they can clone an organ (heart, lung..eyes..joints) Just an organ, not a whole person, and replace our failed body parts with one that our immune system doesn't reject, that's as pliable and natural as human flesh. I really do believe someday, if the Messiah doesn't come, and God doesn't wipe us off the planet.... the scientists will find a way do that.

I agree that this will do nothing to make people stop smoking. Ban them and you have prohibition all over again, this time over smokes. Keep raising the sin tax and the poor people who smoke will continue to get poorer. I smoke and I like it. It is sootheing and relaxing to me mentally. IN this efed up state, I get nasty looks for smoking outside at a park on a trail. I am already outside in the open air. I dont purposely blow smoke at people. I will quit smoking once everyone else stops farting.

They best way to cut down on smoking isn't huge taxes, it is to ban the COMMERCIAL production and sale of cigarettes.
I'd still allow tobacco to be grown and sold. Allow no additives to the tobacco. If people have to roll their own they wont smoke as much and without the additives to make the cigarettes stay on the shelf 10 years they are supposedly not as unhealthy.

that would increase the sale of pipe and chewing tobacco. I know I am too lazy to roll my own. I would find a pipe that I liked and smoke it that way.

Yeah but I think it would reduce the number of new smokers and the amount people smoke. I think people would be more apt to roll their own than to go to the black market so that wouldn't take off. Doesn't matter cause as long as the government can make money off the taxes they'll never ban cigs. They make what, 3 bux a pack at the federal level now?
