so i went back to the LFS - this fish is still there and now has been for the past several months -
My problem is I keep forgetting the price and looking at it and saying God I want that fish ... then the guy reminds me - "you know you do this all the time and then you see the price and say god no..."
Sadly most of the time I go there and just pay and never pay attention to the total - one of these days I am gonna screw up bad and buy that thing -- then me and my fishy will be looking for a home after the hubby kicks me out!

I would shop around, you can find them with a 14 day arrive alive policy and at a lower price. Found one yesterday for $900.

I was planning on going to the store on Friday and told my husband this saying - and then informed me exactly how many pairs of shoes I can get for 1500 instead!
Damn the Double X chromosomes!

Many years ago when I worked at a wholesaler MTI in Staten Island N.Y. When we used to get fish from the great reef I purchased a Pine Cone now for those whom have seen these fish know it is Beautiful. My cost $250.00 Wholesale cost. Well back then 1978 so very little was known. He lasted about 1.5 years. Now if that fish had gone to LFS they would have marked it up to $650.00 and that is shaving down the price to have it sell.
Would I do that no, No Way. Sorry some things belong where they come from........
I hop many others feel the same.

Pinecone fish
NAME
Common Name:pinecone fish
Scientific Name:Cleiopus gloriamaris
Class:pisces
Order:Beryciformes
Family:Monocentridae
Genus:Cleiopus
Species:gloriamaris
ENVIRONMENT
Found in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
Habitat:Tropical, subtropical, and temperate waters in caves and under ledges; occasionally coral-reef habitats or muddy bottoms. Also known to occur at depths down to 1/2 mile.
DESCRIPTION
General:The pinecone fish is a relatively small fish that gets its name from its goldish-yellow body color patterned with a brown criss-cross design which gives it the appearance of a pinecone. The body of the pinecone fish is covered with a hard casing containing spines. As a result, it is also called the pineapple fish and the knight-fish. The pinecone fish glows in the dark from patches on side of its jaw due to the presence of luminescent bacteria found there in gelatinous patches. The glow is usually a green color, but occasionally red in older fish.
Natural Diet:Small fish and crustaceans.
SIZE
Length:
Male/Female8in
(20.51cm)
BEHAVIOR
Social:The pinecone fish is found in schools of up to 1000 individuals. When threatened, the pinecone fish can cut off the blood supply to side of its jaw, thus turning off the oxygen supply that causes the bacteria living there to glow and allowing the fish to hide in the darkness. The pinecone fish is a poor swimmer because its body is encased in a hard bony armor composed of scales with spines.
Reproduction:The pinecone fish has not been bred in captivity.

Well..... I don't believe I can stomach the thought of spending that kind of money on ANY fish.
Aside from the fact it probably would go belly up and I would have to eat it. (Wifes orders)
I have spent that much on a macaw but that can give and recieve affection, talk, lifespan 80years, etc.
I mean come on! Reality check!!!! Its a fish. For that kind of money he better be doing water changes and cleaning the tank!

Fun to say yeah, if I were rich, but since I'm just an average middle income guy..... I'll pass on this "deal".
I know,I know, thanks for being the party pooper moby.
