Seaclone! OMG. It's hard to believe they are even listed as a skimmer. I cut mine apart to use the acrylic on my diy skimmer. They are good to harvest the acrylic and maxijet pump from.
Why would you even bother to harvest the maxijet? I haven't had one run for more that six months without the impellar coming apart in a saltwater tank
.

Ok I must say I am not a very big supporter of the threads that ask every members opinion. I do think in this case it may be benefical to new hobbyists. My question to the members is this.
What do you think is the most inaccuate information new hobbyists are reading on the boards?
Personally, I would agree that there is some inaccurate information that gets posted on the boards, but I also think that the individual asking for information also has to be aware. Many posters on the boards are fairly inexperienced, and in their zeal to help other hobbiest, they may go above and beyond their knowledge and experience. Certainly I myself am not, nor have I ever claimed to be any type of expert; but I have seen things "Positively" misidentified in I.D. threads, I have seen others claim that people are bashing a excellent piece of equipment (like a seaclone skimmer) when they themselves have no experience beyond the seaclone to compare to, etc; And I myself have on more than a few occassions been on the wrong side of a disagreement in a thread
. You're not asking an experts opinion when you post on the boards (again, I'm not saying that there are not some experts here), just saying that you are asking the opinion of other hobbiests - some with more experience, some with less - and you need to realize that when you post. If you have a question or are in doubt, check the profile - if you're getting "expert" information from someone with six weeks of experience, you might want to double check the validity of the answer. I remember one member of the boards, who in a three month time period went from setting up a tank and putting multiple fish in it the first day - and not understanding why they were dying - to telling people that he knew more about lights and lighting than anyone on the boards. Advice on the internet/boards is free and you get what you pay for.
One of my personal pet peeves is that all LFSs are BAD! and petstore owners know nothing about saltwater aquariums and only tell you things to make money

That describes every LFS in my area
It's worth a short drive to go to a REALLY good place, even if one near you is adequate.
One thing I hate is when people think that caulerpa is terrible to put in your tank and when people think that a fish can "adapt" to a smaller tank.
For some fish this is true, their body will release a hormone that makes them stop growing...and obviously this shortens their lifespan A LOT.
Also, when people think that True Perculas are the same as Occelaris, but true perculas are wild caught and that's what makes them different from false perculas.
I also hate it when people call them false perculas.

I hate it when people say you can ONLY grow corals with Halides or T-5's.
Common misconception.

I can tell you as a new person to this message board (new meaning that I've only been here for about two months and just registered last evening) that I have found a wealth of information!! Most of which has been helpful. I'm not sure that there is as much inaccuracy as there is personal opinion. And when you ask for personal opinion, you get just that. However, I have read some threads that even I have not agreed with. But, I think you have to take it all in, digest it and use what is valuable. I can tell you that I recently watched a DVD about saltwater setups, and from what I have learned it was 99.9% inaccurate (very dissapointing)!! It actually recommended that after 48 hours you could introduce your cycle fish, with no problems (crazy!!) Respectfully yours, Tracy

Oh ya.... Joe....I would love to see an informative thread on skimmers. I don't mean, hearing about all the bad ones (which is what I mostly see). Tell me about the good ones. Skimmers that members have that they love and couldn't live without. I think that would be very helpful information for newcomers. Happy Trails, Tracy

-that you should have "x" amount of snails per gallon.
-that a "turf scrubber" works better than a refugium, and it's some sort of new technology
-that the solution to algae problems is algae eaters

IMO all of these are false:
The more Calcium the better
Shrimp molts are full of Calcium
Coral sleletons are mostly Calcium
PH buffers FIX PH
Cooling off MH bulbs somehow reduces the heat in the water
Waterflow doesn't add heat to the water
Shrimp require Iodine to molt
Small Tangs don't require swimming space
Deep Sand beds only need bacteria
During cycling you need a high ammonia spike
