If your sand is clumping I would suggest this to be a sign of not enough stirring. You had the ray in there and that helped keep the sand stirred up, the "glue" that is in fact detritus that is clumping the sand is not being stirred enough to be removed by the filters, feeding fish and feeding coral.
Along with that did you put or have a calcium reactor on this tank? My thinking here is that your calcium - alkalinity levels may be too high and the clumping may be a result of this. A dKH of 13 is fine; anything much higher might introduce complications in balancing your chemistry. I kinda like the number 12 dKH. I think you should shoot for a calcium level of 425-450. This is a shot in the dark really but thought I would throw it in there. I still think you need to stir the sand more.
Do you have any sand sifting creatures in this tank, gobies, sand sifting stars? These could be decimating the sandbed infauna and keeping the sand from being stirred.
I would also suggest an army of nassarius snails. They are carrion eaters and they burrow in the upper layer of sand, which stirs it up a bit and they do not prey on the sandbed infauna. Also some cerith snails would help keep the sand clean of algae as well as stir it up.
I have one large conch, some nass, some cerith, 1 or 2 fancy nassarius, and I just got a golden headed goby.....I add nothing to my tank to raise calcium
NO I did not add a calcium reactor....I added a phosphate reactor....How do I lower calcium????? Are you saying my alk is ok?????
I am going to order more nass snails....and a couple more conch I think
