Seeing how you are not up and running yet, why don't you do a few changes, it's only a metter of cutting out a couple of peices of glass and moving them around and adding another piece or two, have a look at my fuge/sump, the guy at my LFS set this one up and he is very good at it with lots of experience.
What you want to get is flow over the top of your substrate, so you make a box with two pieces of glass and have your water flow up from the drain and over your substrate and than back down, just look at the pics, and if you have anymore questions i'll try and get some better pics. Hope this helps

50 gal fuge sump

As for going with metal halides, I wouldn't second guess it, you won't need a chiller, I'm running 2 400 watt 20,000k halides and 1 150 watt 20,000k halide on my 180 reef, with a completely closed in canopy and two 4" computer fans, I do leave the lid up on my canopy about 1" to help vent, my temp only gets up to 78 during the day and back to 75.5 at night.

the green blue and brown are your surface area, this is called menella or something like that, I always

[hr]
the name of it up, but apparently 1 sq/ft of this is equal to something like 1500 bio-balls, I could be out to lunch with that number but it's high.

just be careful to design it so you don't have sand going into your pumps, and areas to collect silt. you should problebly design it for the future as well incase you want to add a skimmer, I can't see any system running with out one.

Thats right
, just take your time and think about it and don't rush because we all have, including myself. I've just been lucky enough to have a honest and experienced LFS owner as well as another reefer to help me along (squishy)

Looks really good just make the last piece of glass by the return higher . You can do all kinds of tangs just watch which ones are going in, usually same shape and or same color don't work, I have a,
sailfin
naso
blue
powder blue and
yellow tangs in my 180.
And they will get along with the fish on your list.
