Yellow Tang

I just purchased my first yellow tang this weekend. I was just wondering what the best food would be for it. Thanks!

They are herbivores and like to graze all day long. A lettuce clip or two with the seaweed selects or some nori. I have at least two types of it in at all times. They will also eat most macro-algaes (caulerpa, tang heaven, etc). I also use some Formula II flakes for more diet variation. A poor diet will cause a noticeable decline in appearance and health. Variation in diet and allowing the fish to graze throughout the day will go a long way toward preventing those problems.

In addition to algae they need a good source of animal protein containing HUFAs. Mine gets minced scallops spiked with Cod Liver Oil. They are not Herbivores, they are omnivores that require a lot of algae in their diet.

Zebrasoma tangs prefer green algae, Bang Cod Liver oil, how do you deal with the surface slick it leaves behind?

One of the best foods for yellow tangs (all of the zebra species actually) is Thera-A from New Life.
Tangs suck this stuff up, and its supposedly good for their immune system, which is great with the ich-prone zebras. It contains all the proteins they need.
I supplement this with spirulina flake, so they get their greens. Both foods are hungrily devoured by our tangs.

The food absorbs most of the oil. It's actually a kickback from feeding my Banggai, the Tang gets a lot of the leftovers. I don't notice an oil slick. Either bacteria break it down or the skimmer pulls it out. Probably a little of both. Cod Liver Oil has been in use for a long time for supplementing HUFA... take a good look at some of the popular food additive ingredients: Cod aka Maidenfish liver extract ;) I didn't invent it's use, I just take advantage of prior research into its benefits. The Banggai fry are now born much larger in my breeding setup. I can't attribute it directly to the oil but it's quite a coincidence.
I'm not recommending using Cod Liver Oil, I was just stating what I use. But, Selcon has had proven results with MANY breeders.

OH ok I was just asking because it was a new one to me! Sounds good, all I've ever used was Selcon and it does pretty good? How Often to your Bangaiis produce fry? I raised a batch of Flame Cardinals and a batch of Pj cardinals, but i found it to be too much work for me! Do you raise any other species, are the Bangaiis much trouble? Who do you sell to, I might be interested in buying a few breeding pairs.
