Hi guys. Iam not new to sw water, however I am to the yellow tang. Honestly the ich factor scared me w these fish. But as common as they are I love there colors. I got one a few days ago. So far so good. Eats any thing and loves my cleaner shrimp. I can't wait to put him w my fox face ,iam thinking the two should mix well and add lots of movement to the tank. Well my question is this, due to there high tendency to get ich and a few other things I looked into there diet and alot of places recommend garlic as a supplement. Any thoughts on this? I've seen garlic fish soakes and such. Now is this special or can I crush a clove soak sum food and feed um? Sorry if this is a stupid question lol

I wouldn't be surprised if people disagree with this, but it is my experience (and from what I've read) that garlic has negligible effect on ich. It is useful in enticing fish to eat, but does little as far as ich is concerned. If you are going to soak your fish food in garlic juice, fresh is the best way to go.

I feed my yellow tangs 1/2 a sheet of algae every day and the rest of the tank gets either frozen mysis or Spectrum pellets which the tangs also eat.

I have a yellow tang and a foxface they both get along just fine the foxface is a peaceful fish where the tang can be aggressive (yin and yang) thats why they get along so you know what most people dont know is when you have a yellow tang they make good barometers when water quality changes in the tank so does the tang in color so it makes a good addition to the tank

Sounds like you have the YT in a QT setup?? Great!! If you are worried about Ich, why not treat the YT with hypo prophylactically.

I also agree with Eric and Bang, garlic will entice the fish to eat but will not provide any substantial health benefits. I would feed algae sheets at least every other day.

Yes he is. I use hypo to treat ich, but everything I read is good diet and no stress. So I figured keep him at normal 1.023 salinity and watch him. He eats like a pig. Mysis, pellets, sprilina brine, alage I think he eats at nt. I don't see him tear into it like my fox. But it's gone in the am.i do have another question tho. I keep a few shrimp in my qt to keep it regular. The day I got him my cleaner was all over him and he let it, yest he seemed to be chasing the shrimp nipping at his antenna. Is this normal? Everything said there reef safe fish w inverts.

You don't have to hypo ever fish that goes in QT, some fish can stay in QT for three weeks and never show sign of ick. But in my case I'm currently QT'ing a Huma trigger, was in QT for 2 weeks then I saw ick. So now he is going threw hypo, if I started hypo right away he would be almost being done instead of just starting. I normally on an ick prone fish let them adjust for a week in QT, then start hypo even if they don't show any signs. As for garlic it helps there immune system, will not cure ick and fresh is better than the bottle stuff. There are only 2 proven cures for ick copper or hypo. As for your yellow tang they are a very territorial fish adding more fish may have trouble with him picking on them.

I've heard that. I know there listed as semi aggressive. Most of my current fish are either bigger or just out of the way. Mandy's and such. Nothing bothers my Mandy I think BC they mostly just hug bottom or the rocks. My issue will come w my fox. He won't bother a thing ,but the tang idk about lol he came from a tank w a fox in it. So we shall see. There gorgeous fish tho so I hope they co exist ok.

Since your foxface was in the tank first the yellow will be fine. My concern is for any fish that follows after the yellow. You will need to watch him, if he bothers them I would put him in the QT for a month or so giving time for the new fish to settle in and the yellow would need to re-establish his territory.

Ah gotcha. Well he should be it. Iam debating a hovens wrasse but I get mixed reviews as to whether there safe w my shrimps.

Don't want to hijack the thread, but I love the way these fish look. Could I put one in a 90 gal tank? I'm currently trying to develop a list of peaceful, reef compatible livestock that are fairly hardy. I've been leaning away from tangs because of the ich factor, and because I'm not sure they'd have enough swimming room. Opinions?

The tank is currently cycling, and has quite a bit of live rock - I'm not sure how many pounds, but I would say at least 100. At this point I'm more looking for information than planning to buy.

Thanks for the help!

You can't add it for a while- tangs need good water. Once your tank is relatively mature, go for it. IMO a 90 gallon with good filtration is fine.

Agreed. I was worried too,but mine is doing great.it had an eye issue that scared me the day after I got it but that cleared over nt. He must have brushed into something. They eat easily, are well tempered so far lol. One suggestion is get a cleaner shrimp or 2.its the only fish I have that actually looks for the shrimp to get cleaned very neat to watch.

Just to let you all know tangs are swimmers and graze all day in a very large area. With that being said all tangs but 1 will need to go in a 6' long tank, the only tang that will live a long and happy life in a 90gal tank will be the Kole tang. Also, tangs of the same body shape will fight if kept together in small tanks 180 or less.
