I know it's reflex, but plug first. Then pull it out of the water.
Don't you have a GFCI outlet or breaker? It should have tripped!
Glad you are ok!!

one time a few months ago i woke up for school (7:00am) and i decided to feed my fish some flakes, i stuck my finger in the tank but couldnt pass the surface. The water was electrocuted, the fish were swimming around and they were fine, so maybe it was just the surface, i unpluged everything and pluged it back in and all better, never figured out what caused it and prabably never will. The shock felt like one of those trick oens that when you click it you get a shock. (maybe my fish were playing a practical joke
)

Do you use a grounding probe in your tank?

I know it's natural tendency to reach in immediately, but that can be deadly....

that happened to me, but like a dummy i put my hand in the water and grab the fuge light and got SHOCK! then i did it again! SHOCK! then i unplug it

The reason the fish dont get zapped and you do as soon as you touch the surface is because electricity follows the path of least resistance to the ground- neither the fish or the water their in touch the ground so is the same as a bird on an electrical wire off a telephone pole. They arent touching the ground so the current has nowhere to go, you on the other hand with your socks or possibly wet feet after a shower do, hence the wonderful feeling of being zapped lol. Glad youre ok.

Silly silly Carlos....LOL

Is the same way we would reach at a red hot piece of glass or something because you know glass is fragile and it shatters when it hits the ground then we scream like the moron we are after getting burnt lol
