your worst mess up on a reef tank

I've never really messed up my tank, but I've messed myself up messing with the tank. I've cut myself more times than I can count, dropped corals, glue in tank, rocks, glued frags to my hand and rock, spilled skimmate on the carpet (that was baaaad).....I could go on and on. I'm the Clark W. Griswald of reef keeping. There is no way I could put a price tag on it....I'm not done yet. :D

My worst mistake... #1 listening to my LFS.. #2 buying the thing to begin with..

Hmmmm.......lets see, my worst mistake....when I first started dosing kalk, I put 2 gallons in, and did not know that it would make my ph go up. My test kit tops out at 9.5, and I was way above that. 2 weeks later the hole tank (55 gal) exploded with ick. I don't know if the ph caused it? I then dosed with Odin Ex. Lets just say it is not invert safe!

You need to try complete sentences. The worst mistake I made was letting someon take care of it over Christmas. Everthing was dead when i came home.

Added ph buffer straight to the tank without mixing first. Some of it landed on my reb open brain and actually burnt a hole in it. It recovered very nicely however and is doing great now.
There is a pic at my website of the little guy.

My mistake was listning to my wife and letting a dead buttlefly fish for the anemone that killed it to eat. I lost both butterflies I had. One killed by anemone and one was by listning to my wife.

I live in NY NY and i left my window open and i spent the night at my girlfriends place and came home this afternoon and my apartment was freezing and my 20 reef temp was down to 67 f and the 65G was only down to 74 f witch i think is ok, i am worried about my flower pot coral i lowered the heater to 74 f in the 20L so not to raise the temp so fast do you think it will be alright, i guess i will have to either get much bigger heaters or leave my windows closed. <img src="graemlins//eek.gif" border="0" alt="[eek]" />

i was rigging up some hosing to my skimmer. the hosing popped off and the pump shot water all over my power strip. a nice little electric fire came about.
as far as livestock goes, i thought that putting a 4 in rock hind grouper in a 75 was a good idea. wrong, the bioload off of that fish was way too high. needless to say he pretty much crashed my system

Not always checking LFS RO/DI water... got 5 gallons from a store and mixed as usual only to have the tank crash, completly - live rock and all, 2 days later. I called the store and they knew they had a problem but failed to mention it, after some hoopla and threating to sue I got partially reimbursed! :)
always check the water, lesson learned

When I moved I put my Carpet and long tentacled Anenome in a ten gallon tank with a whisper filter. They did great for about three weeks. Then, one night when I came home from work, they had been sucked up the intake hose, and into the filter itself...Was very nasty, and the smell was incredibly bad!!!
My mistake was moving in the first place!!!

When we moved, my lionfish, 2 hermits and 2 snails were put in a 20g for 2 days while waiting for the 90g to be delivered. The 20g had the filter from his original tank, rocks, heater, shells, etc....On the first night the tank was left alone at the new place and the central heat was turned on. Wouldn't you know that the heater in the tank and the central heat thermostat both failed that night? When I got there the next day, the water temp was 65 degrees. Took hours to bring the temp back up to 80 because I didn't want to stress him and the others out. Everything ended up surviving this, but if I ever move again, I will never leave a newly set up tank alone like that again!

Amen to that. My long tenticle anemone has cost me a pair of percula clowns, a pair of firefish and a cleaner shrimp.

When changing my tank from CC to DSB, I had all of my fish and inverts in my quarantine tank. I had a non-submersible heater balancing on the edge of the tank. Well it fell into the tank. You can just imagine what happened. To say the least I had to crank the temp. up in my apartment to make up for the lack of having a heater. My heater for my 55 gallon tank was too big for the little quarantine tank.
