i'm having trouble with a zoo colony, and i've found two possible issues:
looks like some type of worm has started making a colony on the rock:

OR i found this small little snail on a different polyp:

any thing else i should look for? my zoos are looking wilted:

i would get a betta bowl and keep the snail, but thats just me. i like the little pest critters as pets, had an aitasia in a 2.5 gal as a pet once

I think I have these same snails. I never added them, but noticed they were starting show up in my tank and now I have them all over. But I have yet to see anything destroyed because of them. (I think tomorrow I"ll take a close up picture of what I have and post it, just to make sure.
)

I think you are right, it's not a sundial. Does anyone know the name of this snail as I believe I have some too, but like I said, have not seen any ill effects because of them.

That's a relief. I started noticing very tiny ones in my 125 and now I have larger ones (but still small) and I'm sure I have several hundred now, so thinking about having to get rid of them.....well was just a tad scary.

yea, i've been seeing them more and more, and i found one the size of a pea while doing my over night vigil to see if anything is latching on to the zoos.
i'm being told elsewhere that there is a film of algae on my zoas, which i don't see, that is due to lack of flow (which i don't have) so i don't know what's going on.
the rock had some asterinas on it over night, but none that i saw were near the polyps. these snails came and went, an emerald came and went, hermits and astreas cruised on through. nothing was sitting there munching on them.
as for the pox.... what the heck is that??

agreed to the collonista...sundials are the black and white checkered...be sure to check out for them....also looks for the zoa spiders and zoa eating nudibranches.....the zoo pox is white dots on the zoos.
is there a bit of red algae on some of those zoos that arent not looking so hot? hard to see just looked like some red ont he stem, wasnt sure if that was something or not

Your sick polyps do look like they are getting some red of them. I lost a bunch of zoas this summer,it started on one or two polyps on a few colonies, within a few weeks I had lost hundreds of polyps on all my zoas, pretty much wiped them all out. It looks like cyano but will not suck off at all,it encrusts the polyp and must be peeled off. I couldnt find anything similar to it on any forum. I tried freshwater and iodine dips, furan nothing helped and it continued to plunder. At this point every zoa in my tank was dead or closed, maybe 20 different varieties,no other corals were affected. As a last resort I used chemi-clean. I used about 75% of the recommended dosage. they advise you treat for 48 hours then do a big WC and turn skimmer back on. I went with 36 hours, changed 20% then 10% the next day and used a bunch of poly filters changed every day for several days. All the red was gone in the first 24 hours, within a few days some of my zoas that had been closed for at least 6 weeks started to open and they were all open in a couple of weeks. I lost a ton of zoas, some real nice colonies gone. There is a big thread going now about this stuff in the zoa section of another forum, they are calling it 'sticky'cyano.

Theyre talking about zoa pox. I was reading this thread hopefully for an explanation of what it is, but the signs of it are the white dots near the mouth and on the stalk. Somebody who knows more than me can go into the details.

i'll have to look into that. wouldn't cyano just get blown off the stalks? and i'll be honest, i have a palythoa that has it as well, so it's not just on teh zoos, but the palythoa is thriving so i didn't worry about it.
wonderful :( i guess i should look into making or buying a light setup for my 20 gal qt that can handle corals, i don't want to use chemiclean in my tank after reading what it did to some guy, which in turn caused his dog to die :(

cyano can definitely stick to zoos and cover them up once they close and start forming a thicker layer...you can however just lightly brush it off yourself

omg his dog died too? thats crazy, these pox you guys are talking about, are they 'contagious'? i mean it couldnt go from zoas to fish or anything like that right? just a question don't mean to hijack

yea, the guy had to throw out some water that contained corals or something like that. the dog then licked the bushes that the water was poured on, and ended up dying from palytoxin.
i unfortnately am at the whims of that site when it comes to searching, so i'll have to find out about the "sticky" cyano. i've seen the information on the zoo pox.
no jenny, it seems the zoo pox only stays on zoos. doesn't go to any other soft coral or fish.

The red stuff got on some of my palys as well but they were pretty much unaffected. This stuff would not brush off easily, not even with a toothbrush and doesnt have the bubbles like cyano. In addition I had very little cyano in my system either, just a bit in a new frag tank I tied in but none in DT.A lot of zoas are attached to my LR so I really couldnt take them all out and QT,Im glad I finally went the route I did. The guys dog was licking on some of the liverock he had taken out that had dead zoas/palys on them, very sad story for sure.
