    GOOD news for a change

As a native Floridian, I have been going to the Keys for 40 years. I have seen firsthand the damage done by the exploding human population there. as a kid, our family would spend a week or so at a family friend's place on Cudjoe Key, the gateway to the Looe Key preserve. I would love for my...

    Different ID needed?

Just today I collected a couple porcelain crabs here in Ft. Pierce, FL- Home of Saltwaterfish.com. I have a 75 gallon Fowlr that is 100% native- sand, rock, water, fish and inverts. My son and I regularly flip over rocks at low tide and a couple of the rocks were home to hundreds of...

Off Topic ID and general interest pics

The fish in the photos is a Jackknife fish, Equetus Lanceolatus. not to be confused with a High Hat, Equetus Acuminatus. Both are members of the drum family. I had several of both species in a FOWLR and found them to be very territorial and quarrelsome with each other and their tankmates. Even...

Correct size sump for 120 gallon tank?

I agree that the biggest sump possible is the best way to go. As for connecting two tanks with bulkheads, you only need to exceed the capacity of your overflow. I. E. if your overflow is running on say a 1-1/4" inch drain, then use a 1-1/2" bulk.

    Well Water?

Arlene- Do you really have pinfish in your tank? Just curious, 'cause of yer avatar. As for well water, IMO, you never know for sure what's in it, as it changes over time. Groundwater flows, just like surface water. It's picking up whatever toxins , minerals, etc it comes across. There's been...

    75g lighting

There's a lot of T5 setups out there. Your 75 is about 20" deep, minus the sandbed, so a 6 or 8 tube fixture with individual reflectors would be a good choice. Of course, you'll want to eventually customize your tube choice, the tubes supplied with the fixture will be a middle-of-the-road...

    ScottAllerts 40gallon not so nano

Scott- you said in a post that you snorkel in PB inlet- I live in Fort Pierce now, but grew up snorkeling all over the PB inlet area. We lived at 54th st. and N. Dixie- there's a park there that was my starting point for my snorkeling trips. I made some pretty good change selling fish and BCS as...

    Lionfish?

He's been hiding in the rockwork. Haven't seen him in 24 hours. I'm thinking it is probably a scorpionfish anyway. Still gonna get a pic when I see him again.

    Lionfish?

I checked youtube also. This thing I've got is tiny! It is no bigger than my pinky fingernail. It is doing well in the tank, eating baby brines. I've tried to get a pic of him in the tank, but the pics don't come out good. I'm gonna fab a small acrylic box to put him in to photograph him.

    Lionfish?

I use a small pushnet in the grassflats here in S. Florida, mainly to collect small shrip and pods for my tank. I catch a diverse variety of creatures, some of which have a new home in my tanks. On my latest collecting trip, I caught a small (3/8" long) fish that sure looks like a baby lionfish...

    HOB refugium

If you're moving in 5 months anyway, wait until then to make the changeover. Accumulate some more information and plan what you're gonna do. What people were eluding to about the Aquaclear is that you can DIY a decent refugium for less than 50 bucks. With the two powerheads you already have...

    Did you see Sharkwater?

Shark finning. Modern day whaling. The depletion of tuna stocks worldwide. What do these three things have in common? The Japanese seafood industry. Japan's appetite for seafood is overwhelming the WORLD"S supply. The Alaskan pollock fishery exists to supply Japan with pollock roe and surimi...

    Lionfish in the Bahamas

There's several native species in the Atlantic that are closely related to stonefish, complete with venomous spines. I just read thru this thread again, I'm glad it's still breathing. As far as collecting lionfish in FL, it's a non-native species and as such is unregulated- fair game! IMO, the...

    what should I do

Hi Mary, this is Bob, the "guerrilla reef raider". I suggested the Smithsonian because they'd know what to do with the rays. I haven't been to the place in Stuart- I'd forgotten it was there, as I don't take A1A very often, but I think we'll take the kids down there today.
