If you already have algae...then IMO I suggest you get CUC first.....let them munch on it and see how they do......then add a fish
It's only on glass now, sand and rocks are clean. But I'm starting to think it might of be from previous set up, before it crashed. Because i didn't clean tank too hard, just wiped it down with paper towels.

Don't clean the glass on the sides and back (you can do the front so the tank looks pretty LOL), and I highly recommend a cuc before any fish.

I personally love the view from the side of the tank.....personal choice I guess, BUT I clean most of the sides and the front

I will pick up a CUC next week. Unless this hurricane messes up power line and we won't have power for few days.

sounds to me your on the right track. Like stated ealier, this is one of the most frustrating time for a new hobbiest, but use the time wisely, look up the critters you are thinking about, learn about algae because you will have issues, read up on feeding and water changes. Your doing good, Keep it up.

As of right now, ammonia, nitrate and nitrites are all at 0.
Thanks for your help everyone!!! Will update once I'll get CUC next week.

Look's like it's time for CUC. Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are all at 0, PH 8.2. I see a lot of hair algae of all glass, but nothing much on rocks and sand. So I should add snails for now, then fish, after sand and rocks will get dirty I'm gonna add hermit and shrimp?

You can add either snails or hermits in the beginning... just like 1 or two in the beginning to make sure they are OK, and then to fish, then to more CUC, then to corals/harder to keep inverts.

one of the tools of the trade you might want to get is an aquarium scraper. Very helpful. you can get one at petwarehouse or your LFS.

What other test kits would you suggest? I wish there was something digital....so I could get a really accurate reading. It's a little tough just trying to match it up to the colors on the chart (especially when I'm mostly color blind!....I'm always bugging my husband to look at it with me and get confirmation!)

There actually are digital tests, but they are quite expensive... starting at $60 and they get to be as expensive as $250 per test.
