I would unplug the heater and open the lids until your temp comes down. If you keep your tank in a fairly well heated area (mines in our living room) you may not even need the heater as the ambiant temp in the room may keep it in the correct range.

What is the purpose of the drain fitting? Is there a difference in operation between the ones with the fitting and the ones without? I've looked around and can't really find an explanation of why getting the fitting is better, etc. then getting one without the fitting.
