That's what all of us do... pitch the 1st chamber insert in the trash... pull the sponges... pull the bioballs... run chemipure/purigen and a bag of rowaphos.. run a scrubber or a chaeto fuge... good to go! Oh yeah there's always that option for a skimmer, the Tunze nano DOC is one of the better...

best thing you can do for the biocube skimmer is modding it... get a better airpump like some sort of big Hagen or equivalent and run two of the stock airstones off it. Also get a Lee's gravel vac (I think the medium size) and then take the vac tube and replace the stock reaction chamber tube...

An ADA 60P. Drill it or false wall it.. hang a light over the top... run most of the equipment in the sump or in the false walled area.. voila wonderful looking tank. Remember that with most all in ones, you're gonna replace most of the stuff/mod it anyway unless you buy a really good one...
