3" & 4" computer fans for canopies

I've used muffin fans from Radio Shack in this capacity as well. If you'll look carefully, somewhere on that fan there will be info regarding voltages as well as which lead is positive or negative. I was able to find 120 volt AC fans so, no transformer was required.

    nitrate high, dont know why.

If you don't mind seeing the material in your tank you could get some light diffuser material like the stuff for fluorescent lights at the hardware store (hobbyists typically call this "eggcrate" make sure it's NOT painted, though). Cut 6 pieces same size, put the algae inside the cage and wire...

    Help with shrimp!

Anthem, in my experience (no disrespect intended, please) but a pH swing from 7.8 to 8.2 is not that drastic. pH will be depressed first thing in the morning because of CO2 concentration generated overnight from respiration of all organismas in the tank. A climb to 8.2 over the course of the day...

Is green Coralline a good sign?

My experience on this differs. Coralline algae seems to come in several colors including green and red. I would imagine that if circumstances are good enough for green, then should be good enough for the red/purple as well. I rather like the green in some areas of the tank. One thing I've...

    just caught a bristle worm

As long as on b/worm topic, I know there are several types of the polychaete (sp?) worms that will sever a portion of their bodies and this portion will swim up in the water column as part of a bizarre but interesting reproductive strategy. I ask only because last night, a section of worm approx...

Why are sharks not reef safe??

Never having kept one myself, I would have to think that the amount of food necessary to keep a shark alive in a reef tank would also cause a large burden on the biological filtration of that system to the point of causing nitrate levels to rise to the unacceptable point for corals.

    nitrate high, dont know why.

If the clown is swimming around/in/through the leather coral often enough it will likely cause the polyps responsible for food generation (photosysnthesis) to stay contracted to the point that the coral cannot "feed" itself through photosysnthesis. Is the leather coral secreting more mucus than...

    protein skimmer

Amiracle PS 2 air-driven worked great on my old 10 gallon reef (under Ecosystems, John Nicholas's tank) on http://paul.auger.com . The Skilters I've had worked better after removing air intake line and just running an airstone w/ air pump in...

    Acrylic Cement

Looking for online sources for acrylic cement. I plan on building a new acrylic sump for my tank and have had little luck finding this product locally. Main concerns are waterproof seal and non-reactivity with saltwater. Also, can anyone tell me why the vast majority of sumps have water from...

    Salt level Question

Thanks Pred, I'll remember that when I go home to visit. Feel free to e-mail me at nicholas@wcc.net and let me know how things progress in the hobby down there.

    Evaporation Question?

Check your salt level before and after water addition is necessary. If salt level goes up, then evaporation. If salt level is going down, then you have a leak somewhere and the added water is diluting your tank water

    Salt level Question

Salt level of 1.017 should not kill anything IF that level is raised slowly. Lowering salinity is another way to treat ich in a reef tank w/out copper use. I've run a tank at 1.017 for a month and had no losses, but not what I'd want to do if not treating for ich.

    Evaporation Question?

Just upgraded to 92 gal from 30 gal this past weekend. Evaporation has gone through the roof! On the order of 2-3 gal/day! I know it's not leaking because salinity goes up as water decreases.....Lighting is 2 250 watt HQI MH w/ 10,000K dbl end bulbs (1 Aqualine Buschke, the other Ushio)

    sixline mysterious disappeared!

Ditto on the LR re-check. Had one for 6 months and thought I'd lost it....nowhere to be found. 6 months after disappearance sold the tank and when LR removed, out popped the wrasse I'd written off LONG ago!

Live Rock Poll...Please give your 2 cents

Just a secondary thought. The 1-2 lb LR "guideline" seems to have started in the hobby when it was popular to have no substrate in your tank at all. No one seems to mention the substantial biological filtration capacity of sandbeds. Dunno if the comparison could be made that 1 lb LR= 1 lb Live...
