Corner tank canopy?!?

Ren, it's a bit complicated but here's how I did mine. First, it's back to geometry class. Figure circumference. C=2 times pi (3.14) times the radius (length of your flat sides. Divide circumference by 4 to get length of arc you're trying to cover. That will be length of wood to cover your front...

65k and 10k mh bulbs results after a few weeks.

Ironreef, I'm using both right now in a side-by-side comparison. Way too early to tell which I like better. Had excellent luck w/ Ushios in the past. Used to run AB bulbs in old 175 watt pendant. Trying now in a side-by-side. Hard to make a call yet due to just upsizing to new tank and not fully...

    Light?

Also, over time the spectral output tends to shift. For MH bulbs the shift is to the yellow-red end of the spectrum. Very obvious change from blue-white to yellow red. The bulbs still fire but do not encourage the growth we want.

65k and 10k mh bulbs results after a few weeks.

You make me really glad I went w/ 10000K from the start. One thing many people might not know. On the double ended HQI 10000K bulbs, actual "K" rating is NOT 10000K! Mainly a marketing thing. From online research I found that, for instance, the Ushio double ended bulb "K" rating is in the...

    Hey all you DIY'ers - Canopy/Lighting Q

Broomer, let me know if those pics got through. BTW my lighting is only 2x250 watt HQI double ended MH's. 10000K in each (1 AB bulb, the other Ushio). Love these lights.

    Tank line to sump question

Broomer5, I'd be happy to show pic of my under-couch sump if I could find out how to post the darn image. I have no website so URl is no help.....

    Tank line to sump question

Actually, I'm planning on building my own, so only looking for design ideas right now. I should have sufficient room under my couch (no kidding, that's where all my equipment is) to build a sump 36"Lx20"Wx14"H.

    Tank line to sump question

Broomer, thanks for the response. Makes perfect sense. Take a look at the URL below and tell me what you think of this, please: http://www.superskimmer.com/evosump.htm Seems this design would solve that and result in a litlle...

    Tank line to sump question

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I'm talking about where water enters sump not tank. I'm just thinking that noise would be even less an issue if water entered sump below waterline. Thanks for the response.

    Tank line to sump question

OK, explain to me why the discarge line from the tank MUST enter at the top of the sump above the waterline. All designs seem to do this. Is there a reason?

First of all your system could be holding CO2. Take a cup of tank water and measure pH. Then aerate it for an hour or so and re-check it. If pH rises, your system is building up excess CO2. Unfortunately, my books talking about this are not here w/ me. Find out if THAT is the problem first. John

What kind of filtration do you use?

Only "real" filtration is a protein skimmer, LR and LS. refugium coming though.......

    nitrate high, dont know why.

Mr. Bubble e-mail your tank specifics (size, filter, lighting, and substrate) at nicholas@wcc.net. Easier to do it that way. I'll be waiting.

    3" & 4" computer fans for canopies

Old extension cord works great as would an old lamp cord. Remember, this is only for the 120 volt AC ones.

    Bubbler in the reef

No bad effect on corals but you're gonna end up w/ salt creep around top of aquarium. As bubbles pop, salt spray will form a crust in that area. Also, the bubbles could (if small enough) skim some protein from water but would only be effective at this if "scum" was removed regularly.

    nitrate high, dont know why.

I imagine you could do that but remember the caulerpa need some light at least to continue to grow.

weird growth on my live rock

Sounds like a foram. It's a sessile invertebrate that secretes a calcium based skeleton just like hard corals do. They are typically a sign of good biodiversity in a reef tank. Hard to tell without a picture, though.

    nitrate high, dont know why.

I found it for 10 bucks at Lowe's. Unsure on cable ties, just make sure no metal in the ties! Other option is to super glue it closed maybe? Also, the clear plastic balls people play w/ hamsters in would work as well (holes drilled in it of course). That option would be even cheaper I'd guess.

    Help with shrimp!

Just to clarify, that pH swing was over the course of an entire day. Not as a result of changing pH due to addition of baking soda. In that case, absolutely correct that change should not be that quick.
