little white star

Take it out. Do a search for "Predatory Starfish" on www.garf.org .If this is what you have, get rid of it and be on the lookout for more.

Harlequin Shrimp and other unadvisable but tempting creatures...

As attractive as the Harlequin Shrimp are, you'd think someone would start farming the "Crown of Thorns" starfish as a food source for 'em. Also, there is an article on www.garf.org regarding acropora eating starfish and using harlequin shrimp to...

    worms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not harmful at all! They show up in my tanks any time a do a major live rock rearrangement. If you have a sump, check it too. They go nuts in mine. Extra filtration is never a bad thing.

    Power Sweep Powerheads

Ocean Currents makes an oscillating return for like 50 bucks. Turbine powered like a sprinkler. No electricity or seals to worry about, it uses pump output to turn gears that rotate output. Very little water velocity loss, too. 2 months so far and only glitch was when I first got 'em, hooked 'em...

    Durso Standpipe Microbubbles

Ok, I added one of these standpipes to my 92 gal RR corner tank. Noise dropped to almost nonexistent. Unfortunately, now I have a problem with microbubbles in tank. Any suggestions. Turnover is on the order of 700 gal/hr plus.

    budding coral

Usually will separate on its own. Wait until then and slowly move to an area of better lighting. This new one will actually be a "clone" of the original. Congrats!

    glass cover

Glass cover also alters spectrum of light reaching corals. Just my 2 cents

whats the best salt to use for reef?

I've used Tropic Marin, Kent, reef Crystals, Instant Ocean and one or two others I can't remember the names of. Personal preference is Instant Ocean (1st synthetic salt used for clownfish breeding). Been using it for 15 years unless it's not available then Reef Crystals or Kent. Reef Crystals...

    SOMETHING GROWING IN SKIMMER!!!

I get them and calcium-tubed fanworms (VERY small ones) in my skimmer all the time. Has never caused any problems. Although, I guess if ya get too many they might start to interfere w/water flow thru skimmer. I usually cleam em out when I do a thorough cleaning on my skimmer every 3-6 months.

    Cleaner Shrimp killing/clean my clam?

Stressed clams secrete a very smelly mucus. Cleaner shrimp are attracted to it incredibly! Vicious circle, clam stressed emits mucus which attracts shrimp. Attacked clam secretes more mucus and shrimp will, many times devour entire clam. Get some eggcrate (light diffuser) and screen off clam...

Permenantly removing an RO unit ?

Ran into same issue when I moved. Saddle valve can be closed so water no longer flows to RO unit, right? Just close valve and remove hose to RO unit is all I did. I don't use those valves anymore for that reason. I split my washing machine coldwater line with a garden hose-type "Y" valve with...

Where is the heat coming from/do I need a chiller?

Maury, what kind of thermometer are you using? I ask because a friend had what looked to be a hi-dollar mercury thermometer he was using and it kept giving him a reading of 89 degrees with lights off. We talked it over and he bought a chiller. Chiller thermostat reads 82 degrees when his...

Do pure multi-channel lighting timers exist?

X-10 mini-controller will allow 4 circuits independent on/off control w/ 2 on/off cycles per day if desired. Make sure to use x-10 "receiver modules" suitable for wattage of lights on each circuit. Only visible item I have is timer control module itself. But you could hide this too. I LOVE mine...

    Bubble on my power head!

Always was my opinion it is caused by static electricity. Charge existing on p/h will dissipate and bubbles will no longer be more attracted to p/h than anything else.

    orange-spotted filefish

Obligate coral feeder. Some sources say they can be "trained" to eat other items. But, for my money, if it eats coral in the wild, it will eat coral in your tank. I'd advise against it, Fester
