    Closed loop via powerheads?

First off, thanks to many of you who post here regularly and help us newbies not spend a ton of money on future failures. So, here's my question... I'm planning on developing a sump/fuge system with a 20 long for my non-drilled 55 gal main tank. In addition, I am thinking about creating a...

    Do Fish sleep

I just added sand to my tank causing a bit of a sandstorm. This morning, I got up and was very concerned because my yellow clown goby was almost white! I turned on the light and went to go take a shower. Upon my return from my shower, I took a look at the tank again and he was completely...

How do you build your rock pile?

I just swapped out my crushed coral substrate for about 80 lbs of Southdown in my 55 gallon tank (what a sandstorm!). I’m now doing a little aquascaping with an additional 30 lbs of live rock. My question is this: when you place your rock, do you allow it to touch the sidewall glass or is it...

    lighting opinion?

I'm looking at upgrading my lighting to PC (from NO). Obviously, the prices for some of these on the auction site are pretty attractive compared to the $300-400 you see on some models. Of course, I'm skeptical about the quality -- you usually get what you pay for. I'm interested in getting a...

    The importance of lighting?

Thanks for the insight. Yeah, I probably have too little water flow, plus I have no idea exactly how old the current lights are. I also have a second set of NO lights that I could use, so I might be able to have the 20,000K, actinic, 50/50 combo setup. I'll look into the cost of replacing the...

    The importance of lighting?

I inherited a 55 g tank that I've had set up for about 4 months. I seem to continue to have a cyanobacteria problem as well as no coralline algae growth. After doing a fair amount of research on SWF.com as well as other sites, I think my problem is lighting. The tank (an "established" sw tank...

    missing peppermint shrimp?

I've got a 55 g. I think I'm also experiencing a bit of a breakout of what I think is cyanobacteria (velvet-y soft maroon stuff). If the little fella didn't survive, it wouldn't surprise me that this could be an effect of his decay in some hidden crevice.

    missing peppermint shrimp?

I haven't seen my peppermint shrimp for about a week or so. And, yes, I have looked with a flashlight at night. Granted, he likes to hide, but at what point do I start digging around in my tank to verify that he's alive? What do you do for your little fellas that are MIA?

High pH? Is this a problem?

I'm still pretty new to this hobby and learning a lot. I'm using DI water, but I knew I needed to monitor my chemistry better, so I bought a Red Sea marine test kit with the various tests. I tested my pH and Alkalinity last night. My pH was about 8.4 (maybe even toward 8.6!), and my...

    Anyone homeschool out there?

After considerable debate, my wife and I decided to homeschool our children (2nd and 4th grade now). Somewhat surprisingly, kindergarten was the hardest by far. There are definite advantages to homeschooling over the public schools, and IMO, it is relatively easy to manage around the...

    two for one? Hitchhiker help...

Nope, not a barnacle. Another one has a dead barnacle on it, so I can compare them. This has no visible opening like a barnacle would have... Seeing as how it has never moved, I'm going to guess that it's dead anyway -- whatever it is/was.

    Sea Lab #28?

Thanks. I after reading so much here, that's what I figured. It also seems that it can make your calcium skyrocket according to other posts here.

    Sea Lab #28?

I inherited an already operational 55g tank and have had it up and running for over a month now. I have chemical test kits for ammonia and nitrate and everything is within acceptable levels. The person who gave me the setup used Sea Lab #28 to maintain proper calcium, etc. (roughly 5 tablets...

    two for one? Hitchhiker help...

I recently got a few Mexican Turbos and later noticed that one has a little friend with him. It's the little disk-shaped shell near the opening of the snail (at the top of the pic). I hope you can see him in the image (sorry, just starting to figure out how to take pics). It sorta looks like...

    lighting while on vacation?

I'm going on vacation next week (5 days) and I have someone to feed the fish in my FOWLR tank, but I was wondering about the lighting needs for the fish and inverts. Should I have my fish-feeder turn the light on in the morning and off in the evening? I only feed my fish once a day. My tank...
