    Beginner coral-ish things?

I've just ordered 260 watt PC lighting for my 55 gallon tank. Slowly, but surely, I'm improving this setup. I'd like to get one or two safe, easy starter frags/polyps. What should I start with? I've read that leathers and mushrooms (& maybe zooanthids) are the easiest to start with and...

    expensive lighting

    "Correct" pH/Alk levels?

Water... I was thinking that might be a part of the problem. At least I know I shouldn't be using tap water. :scared: I'm using DI water with the unit shown below. It is a DI unit, and more expensive in the long run than buying a RO/DI unit, but I haven't shelled out the big bucks for a...

    "Correct" pH/Alk levels?

I'm still a bit of a novice when trying to get my chemistry right, but I know that some things are just fine right now. Nitrates: 0, Ammonia: 0. But my pH is about 8.6 and my Alk is "high" (my test kit just gives a relative value). I've been battling cyano a bit and I noticed that it actually...

How long to wait for skimmer?

Good point! I don't know. I'll have to check that -- it's kinda hard to see back there with the dark acrylic.

    Custom SeaLife PC lighting?

Used, but supposedly for only 4 months or so -- and that was my concern. I'm assuming any 65 w straight-pin bulbs will work for long-term maintenance. I'm just looking for some other people's experience. I currenly have NO lights (50/50 and actinic) on my 55 gal and I'd like to upgrade.

    Custom SeaLife PC lighting?

Anyone know anything about this brand? I'm looking at some and I'm not really familiar with these. 4x65 watt with lunars. I'm assuming they're better than the Jebo's you get at the auction site, but how would they compare to a similar configuration from Coralife? Anyone use these?

How long to wait for skimmer?

I just got a used AquaC Remora from the auction site. I've had it up and going for a few days now and don't yet see any good foam or slime in the top. I know I've read here and other places that it often takes a few days for a skimmer to "break in". How long should I wait before I should...

    plumbing options? Squidd or others...

Thanks a ton kneescar. Now that I know how to "properly" do PVC, I might have a little more luck. (yeah, I'm still a bit unsure of myself -- I'll have to have some success before I feel more confident) But still, is there a real reason why people use PVC rather than tubing?

    plumbing options? Squidd or others...

I'm trying to make my plans for my sumpfugium (20 L supporting a 55) and I've learned a ton from all your experiences. BUT... I can't help but notice that almost all solutions I see use PVC pipe. Certainly that's a good solution, but isn't every joint another potential leak? Is there a good...

    U-tube vs CPR overflow

Thanks for your input. I guess that's sort of what I already thought. Nevertheless, there's nothing like a testimonial to solidify your opinon. Whenever there's a whole lot of a product on the auction site, you know that there is probably a design problem. Thanks again.

    U-tube vs CPR overflow

I'm planning on setting up a sumpfugium and need an overflow box for my 55 gal. So... there seems to be two general designs regarding overflow boxes: The U-tube siphon and the CPR siphon with air-pump. Any opinons? Pros vs cons? How loud are they? It appears as though Squidd prefers the...

    Goby - Shrimp partnership?

I have a great little goby (Amblyeleotris randalli Randall's Prawn Goby) that I think would partner with a pistol shrimp if I got one. I just swapped out my crushed coral for sand, so I think he'll now create a burrow, given the chance. Has anyone ever done this in captivity? Do they need to...

    Sand depth...

OK... I'm having a little bit of difficulty deciding whether to use a deep sand bed or a shallow sand bed and how deep either one really is. I've read where a lot of people have a 2" depth (SSB) and other folks have 6" depth (DSB)... so... what is 2.5-4" depth? I sorta put in too much sand...

    Lows sand

Me neither. I'd see if you can find someone who still has some Southdown. I got mine from a post on another saltwater/reef site. Sure beats paying LFS prices!

How do you build your rock pile?

Thanks for the insight. There is really only one spot where it is touching (not not really putting much pressure, I think), so I think water flow will not be an issue. I might try to reposition them a bit, but I think I really like the way it is -- so if I can't fix it, I'm not going to worry...
