Lionfish on a hunger strike..any ideas?

Check his appearance. Are any of the spines showing from his rays? Any scales pealing back? Any white powdery substance covering him? Post in the Disease Forum, Beth and Terry B are really good about getting back to people. Time is of the essence, I lost both of my lions after waiting too long.

Would you consider this a DSB???

It's not "how much" sand you have, it's how "deep" it is. That's impossible to tell from your post without knowing the dimensions rather than the gallon capacity of your tank. For instance, a tank that is more shallow will have more square inches of floor space which means that more sand will...

    QT Mandarin

So if a Mandarin or Scooter Blenny have very selective diets, and if all of the books I've read and everyone who's opinion I respect on this board say that they need a big pod population to eat and hunt, then how do you quarantine them before adding to your show tank? Won't they die waiting in a...

Lionfish on a hunger strike..any ideas?

Initially, neither of my Lions (sadly now deceased) would eat until I dropped some silversides into the power heads. The jets shot the ss across the tank and the movement stimulated their hunting instincts. A friend I have would [hr] a chunk of shrimp on a feeding rod and tap the lion until...

    Majorly Confused

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the input. As far as the lr, even if it had experienced die-off, shouldn't it be re-seeded after 3 months? I did do a lot of water changes because I had some cloudiness and also had an algae bloom. LFS told me to do 20% water changes each week. Now I've...

    Confused & Dazed

Thanks for the compliment Ed, but that's why I'm confused. How the heck can I be getting pods if the water is so high in Ammonia? Wouldn't that inhibit cycling, maturing and therefore growth in the system. I'm afraid to ad my clowns back and start restocking next week because of the ammonia.

    Confused & Dazed

Here are my specs: 75 gallon reef tank, 3.5 inch sand bed, 75 lbs live rock, protein skimmer etc. First, let me say that I moved too fast and am returning the favor to MLFS by ordering on line in the future. At any rate... I have a nice rock of button polyps, a great pice of colt coral, two...

    Majorly Confused

Sam: I just removed a dead feather duster (that was an absolute b***h to pry from the rock it cemented to!) last Friday, other than that, there are no dead corals or vertebrates floating around. I'm not sure about the rock-I bought each piece from 3 different LFS each within an hours drive. I...

    Cleaner Crew with Triggers

So from what I'm reading, the hermits and normal cleaner crew are probably out for an aggressive setup with Triggers. How does anyone keep their tank clean then?

    Asassi Vs Picasso Trigger

Okay, I've decided that I would rather go with a Picasso than a clown trigger (thanks for the tips everyone!), now the question is: Asassi Trigger or Picasso? Any ideas? Problems? Which is more aggressive any people's experience?

    Beth, I'm Paranoid

Thanks for answering Terry, you also gave me a couple of hints when I was going through this ordeal and I apologize for not passing along a thank you. The clowns have undergone treatment for 10 days and they seem to be fine. A single black bump on each one's head, but the graying on their tails...

    Any idea on these critters?

No tails, no front legs. They're about the length of half the width of your small fingernal and almost transparent, so it's tough to count segments. I'd say there are between 6-10 segments per creature and it looks like a leg on each side per segment.

    Beth, I'm Paranoid

Hi Beth! I just lost a couple of Lions to some type of bacterial infection, you and TerryB seemed to think it was ich combined with something else. Formaline baths and hyposalinity saved my clowns, but I lost the Lions. I was just looking through "The Marine Aquarium Problem Solver" by Nick...

    Any idea on these critters?

I just went through a bout with ich and some other bacterial infection. Lost two lions and had to move my clowns to a hospital tank where they will sit for another 3 weeks to clear the water from whatever was in it. In the meantime, the red-brown stuff that has constantly been on the bottom of...

    Which Trigger

I have a 75 gallon set up waiting to reintroduce my clowns after a bout with ich, and a 125 that is cycling. I am thinking of adding a trigger to the 125 but was wondering about other peoples experiences with size and agression with any of the following triggers: White Tip Huma Rectangle...

Thanks for the help Beth, but we lost 'im...

Terry: You had me treat the Lion and my two clowns with a formalin dip and start treatement with Maracyn II. Unfortunately, the Lion didn't make it. In the quarantine/hospital tank I will change the water, but what about the sand? Should I wash it, throw it out? Thanks.

Thanks for the help Beth, but we lost 'im...

I just wanted to say thanks Beth for helping me with the problems with my Lion and clowns. Lost the Lion this morning, he wasn't eating, but each time I put him in the Formaline dip he perked up so I thought things were getting better. Amazingly, the clowns are doing much better, they are...

    Beth Help!

I'm sorry, I misspoke, it is Maracyn II I'm treating with. I went to the [hr] to get some formaldehyde and they looked at me like I had an extra appendage growing out of the middle of my head. Where would I pick some up? They gave me the impression I would need a prescription.

    Beth Help!

Terry: Thanks for the response. I went ahead and started Maracyn last night as the Lion just looked so bad I figured that it would either hasten his demise or start him on the road to wellness. As far as quarantining, I'm sure you can recognize from my previous posts that quarantining had not...
