Switched from CC to DSB/Algea problem

I switched from CC to DSB about a month ago. I also replaced my lights with two 90W Smart lights compacts. Since I made the changes, I have been plagued with algea blooms and brown algea on top of the sand. I used 4" silica sand and topped it with 1" live sand from my lfs. My readings were fine...

    Bye,bye snails

Everything in my tank fish and inverts are doing well, except for my snails. There are empty shells scattered about the tank and my blue legged crabs seem to enjoy them after they die. There are times when they "fall and cannot get up". There is no copper in the tank!! What can it be? 120 Gal...

    What are these tiny things?

I just looked, as I often do, with a flashlight into my tank at night. Swarming on top of the sand and swimming around are hundreds of pinhead size organism. I switched from CC to 4+" of sand and 1" of live sand. Could these have been in my live sand? or could they be new pepperming shrimp...

    New lights and DS/Algae bloom

I just got rid of my cc and replaced it with 41/2"sand bed + 1/2 live sand on top. Also changed my lights from two fixtures of two 30W flourescent each to two smart PC 96W each. Sudden algea bloom. Should I just wait it out? 120 Gal FOWLR 1 Yellow tang 1 Blue tang 1 Sailfin tang 3 chromis 1...

Switched from CC to DSB/Keeping fingers crossed

Well, I finally did it. I searched every where for South Down sand and couldn't find it, so I took a risk and bought play sand from Toys R US at $4.99 for 50#. I cut a piece of 5" wide board to fit snuggly in the bottom of my tank dividing it in half. I then removed the CC from half a tank with...

    From CC to SB

I am about to switch from cc to sb. I read somewhere that I could just buy the sand at Home Depot. Is it the sanitized play sand that they have or should I look for something else. When I get the sand do I have to rinsed to treat in any way?

    Will my lights do?

I have had flourescent lights on my 120 G tank for two years. I do change them every eight months or so. I have two fixtures with a combination of 50/50 and 10,000 K in each. Each bulb is 30watts, not a big deal. My LR seems to be dying off and I have some green algea, not bad. Yesterday, I...

    Anyone allergic to aquarium water???

I have had my tank set up for about two years and for the past year or so I have developed very dry skin on my right hand finger. I have tried several remedies and it comes and goes. Someone said to me that fish tanks might have bacteria that can cause skin infections. I know I should be asking...

    My stars are falling

A couple of days ago I asked for help in trying to figure out what is happening to my starfish. One of my two sand sifting stars was missing two of its arms and the next day it was dead. The other sand sifter is ok and has all its arms. Yesterday, I noticed a dark moving glob in the bottom of my...

My stars are falling apart. Please help!

The other day I received a shipment from SWF that included two brittle stars. Within three days I noticed that one of my sand sifting stars was missing two arms. This morning it was dead. I concluded that the brittle stars had killed it; however, I just noticed that one of my brittle stars is...

My two sand sifting stars have lived happily for two years. How much food is too much???

I had two sleeper gobies that were inseperable. One of them would disappear for days inside a mount of crushed coral or under some of my tank decorations. In a recent cleaning of the tank I found a cluster of eggs attached to the inside of a large barnicle. I am sure that if they hatched the...
