    My new clams are here!

Being a young and naive hobbyist, I bought a maxima crocea clam on site. They are certainly beautiful, but it died right away. I paid $100 for it, and luckily my lfs guy replaced it. He felt it had nothing to do with my tank, but it just didn't make the trauma of the trip from the ocean to my...

    the best temp

My tank seems to be about where everyone elses is. It stays around 80 with a little lower at night and a little higher in the day. My hammer head coral is doing great, as well as all of the other corals. At first I thought that it was too high, but now feel comfortable with the tempature, as...

    Peppermint shrimp

Hi guys! I have a few aptaisia in my tank, and have heard that peppermint shrimp will eat them. Are there any problems with having peppermint shrimp? I have mainly corals in my tank, but I do have 2 mandarin gobies, a jawfish, a zebra tang, and some chromeses. I see about a half a dozen or...

    Need Help With Clam!!!

I have a question about crocea clams. I just got one on Sunday, and my lfs guy placed him for me near the top of my tank on a flat rock, in case he decided to move around a bit. Well, he did move. So, I moved him to a different location, thinking he wanted to get out of the light, as he was...

Successful reef tank! except for softies

Just a stupid question, because the answer is probably "yes", but are you adding calcium and trace elements? They may be used to some sort of supplement, if they were doing fine at first, but now are fading.

First piece of Coraline on my glass just appeared

OK now I am confused. I thought that corraline algae ws the hard purple stuff that grows on your lr. What it sounds like you are describing is the soft reddish/pruplish algae that grows on glass. So which one is coraline algae? Be kind...I'm new.

    copepods or ghost shrimp?

Thanks for the input. When I asked my lfs if I should get one or 2, he said a male and female would be fun to watch. He knew for sure he had a male, and would have to check the other ones to see if there was a female. I will only go with a male & female. I'm still waiting to hear more...

    copepods or ghost shrimp?

Thanks W.G. for your help. I would not want the gobies to starve to death, so I will wait if I need to. I hope that whenever I add the gobies, I will be able to keep them supplied with food. I have a 220 gal. tank with about 200# LR. and another 100# (?) of the dead kind. (hope that makes...

    copepods or ghost shrimp?

Thank you, yes that's the link. I think What I am seeing is an amphipod. I believe from their description that the copepods are much smaller, and probably the life I see living in my sump/refugium. They are really tiny, and crawling on the sides of the glass of the tank. I know in my lr I...

    copepods or ghost shrimp?

Remember, I'm new, so don't laugh. Every day, a couple of times a day, I see these big, well 1/4" size bugs floating through the water. I don't know if they are dead or alive, but they are see through and they have antennae, and their bodies are curved, and they look like they have shells on...

    Introducing new corals

I'm just wondering the best way to introduce new corals or whatever to your tank without risk of introducing any contaminates from lfs?

    Tang movement

I have a zebra tang that likes to swim towards the bottom of the tank, and then brush his body along the bottom sideways. kind of like he's scratching an itch. He looks fine and healthy. Just wondering if that is normal Tang swimming?

    Fox coral

I went to a lfs yesterday, just to see what they had, and they have a very good looking fox coral. I passed on it, becasue the only stuff I've bought for my tank, is from the pro who has set up my tank, and helping me through the start up phase. Also, I've never actually put anything in my...

    can't leave the hobby

Can you keep them in a big reef tank, if the few fishes you have do not eat copepods? I would like to eventually set up a seahorse tank, unless it's possible to keep them in my reef tank. I think a lot of people get into saltwater tanks because they want seahorses, only to find out they are...

    Baby Brittle Starfish ?

I saw today coming out of a little crevice in my live rock a little tiny, tiny starfish. It was definately a starfish. Five legs and a round body. The legs looked like a brittle star. Long and thin. My question is, when he crawled back into a crevice, a couple of his legs were sticking out...
