Should I ditch my Canister filter??

Hey all, I'm running a 55 gallon with about 50 lbs. of live rock, 4" sand bed, couple power heads, a Aqua C Remora Pro HOB Skimmer, and an Eheim Canister filter. Current stock is 1 Coral Banded Shrimp, 1 Peppermint Shrimp, 1 Coral Beauty Angel, 2 True Percs, 1 Firefish, about 10 Blue Legged...

    New 55gal.

Do you have a sand bed or crushed coral? If you have crushed coral you will need to vaccuum it out during your water changes. Use the gravel cleaner and just dispose of the water when you are done. By syphon we mean...stick the one end of the hose in the tank about half way and suck on the...

    New 55gal.

I use the hose off my old gravel filter and just start a syphon into a large rubber maid container I use only for this. Takes only a few minutes to syphon the 10-15 gallons I remove for my changes (55 gal tank). Then I begin to slowly pour the new pre-mixed water in being careful to not...

    One Brave Clownfish

HELP HELP HELP - tank almost 90 degrees

I would unplug the heater and open the lids until your temp comes down. If you keep your tank in a fairly well heated area (mines in our living room) you may not even need the heater as the ambiant temp in the room may keep it in the correct range.

new tank started, some basic questions please...

82 is a bit high for the temp. There is a range of temps that most people go with, but I think 76-78 is about right. I have a heater in my tank, but have never used it because the ambiant temp in my house keeps my tank in the 76-78 range. I spike in the summer to 78-82 but there is not much I...

    Emerald Crab Legs Falling Off?

Hi, This afternoon I came home from work and my emerald is lying on the bottom of the tank with his legs scattered around his usual stomping grounds? I am wondering if maybe my coral banded and him went at it and the emerald lost? Anyone ever heard of something like this? Are CB shrimps known...

    How To Add Fish

I would always acclimate everything you put in your tank. Run a search on this site and you will find several techniques and methods to acclimate fish and inverts. Most fish need at least 2-3 hours of slow consistent acclimation to your water before adding. Trust me it's time consuming but...

    Clownfish not eating ?

You may want to try some sort of frozen food instead. My true percs used to like the freeze dried shrimp but now will barley eat it and have never liked flake. I'm currently feeding mine Prime Reef and they love it. Just thaw it in tank water and break it up before putting it in the tank. If...

    Percula Clownfish Behavior

I've had my pair of true percs for about 6 months now and they have pretty much always stayed in the back right corner of the tank. They do come out and swim the length of the tank pretty often and will always follow me around the tank when I get close. They are all different though. I've...

Question about the Aqua C Remora Pro's with the drain fitting?

Cool, that's what I thought it did, but wanted to confirm before ordering it. Can you just cap it off if you don't want to use it for now, or do you have to use it if you get the version with it?

Question about the Aqua C Remora Pro's with the drain fitting?

What is the purpose of the drain fitting? Is there a difference in operation between the ones with the fitting and the ones without? I've looked around and can't really find an explanation of why getting the fitting is better, etc. then getting one without the fitting.

how many 2-3'' fish can you have in a 50 gl

I think most people would agree that the biggest fish you want to house in a 55 is a dwarf angel (ie: flame, coral beauty, etc.) Maybe some others with more experiance can confirm or refute that claim Triggers, Tangs, Large Angels all need much more room and most are very territorial. You...

live rock question again sorry. =)

Thanks sandman, that gives me a much better idea of what I'd be getting. Do they have alot of coraline on them or not really? What are you using to cure them. Is that just a power head in there?

live rock question again sorry. =)

Kinda off topic from the orginal question, but can someone give me an idea of how much 12lbs of LR looks like from this site? I know it totally varies depending on the rock, but a ballpark idea would suffice What I mean is like how many rocks are we talking? Relative size, etc?

    Berlin Vs Remora

I'm actually shopping the Remora's right now and am curious if I should just buy the pro instead of the standard for a 55 gallon? I don't imagine I would use this skimmer on a bigger tank (125g-225g) anytime in the future so is the pro really that much better? Also could you eventually...

Just bought my first two clownfish

Well your not gonna like this answer, but you really shouldn't put a tang in a 60 gallon (especially a tank that just finished cycling) and also shouldn't put a mandarin in such a young tank. The tang will most likely stress out b/c of lack of room and probably develop some sort of illness...

Should I go ahead and QT all my fish to be safe??

Hey Beth, Thanks for the reply. I will move the clowns over immediatly then. My QT is a 30 gallon (long). I realize this may be small for the Hippo, but he is still very young and only about 2 1/2". He and the 2 young clowns will be the only fish in the QT during treatment as they are my only...

Should I go ahead and QT all my fish to be safe??

Hey everyone, My Hippo came down with Ick so I am in the process of following the FAQ for Hypo-Salinity treatment in my QT tank. I am wondering if I should just go ahead and move over my two clowns and treat them as well. Reason I ask is they are not showing any signs of Ick and I don't want...
