Maybe OT...What made you choose to go with Saltwater???

It was the colorful fish for me which initially turned me. The fins on my bala sharks were the brightest thing in my tank.

    Filtration Question - gph, dsb

Wow, so now it *REALLY* sounds like a need more filtration. So I should include my powerheads because they are moving water. Still if i were to cut that in half because the other calcs being the maximum turnover, i am way under. Does going back to freshwater ever come to mind when shelling...

    Filtration Question - gph, dsb

The dsb is beggining to sound like a step in the right direction, but as far as the diy sump and refugium, i have no clue. I'm not really a diy type of guy, but have been known to put together swingsets and other childrens toys. I have no idea what a refugium is. I guess i'll have to use the...

    New Fish Tank

Well, I did some research on this and it seems that nobody will ship glass tanks because of weight and breakage reasons. Probably call some fish shops around your area and price things. Then post on here the prices they are giving you, and i'm sure people would reply if that is a "fair" price...

    Filtration Question - gph, dsb

Hmmm....that's they way I was thinking too. I'm still new at this, but the lfs told me to count the powerheads/ugf and figure those into the equation. So right now my 280/65 = 4.30 times per hour. Not enough i'm assuming. If I added a Emperor 400 it would boost me to 680/65 = 10.46. Is this...

    DSB colors, playsand, live sand

I saw some pics on the internet of dsb's and it looks like everyones dsb has 2 colors to it. Questions: What color is playsand (quickcrete, southdown)? What color is live sand? Do the two ever mix in color? I was just thinking that a solid color would look more natural then white/brown...

    Filtration Question - gph, dsb

I currently have a a Emperor 280 at 280 gph, and a UGF with 2 penguin 550 powerheads running at 145gph i believe. So right now i think i'm filtering 570 gallons per hour. Do you count powerheads in the gph equation or just your filter for times turning a tank over. If I were to switch to a...

tank problems, brown growth, fish dying

Thanks Marty and everyone else for their replies. I will wait it out a while here. I'm thinking of adding a Emperor 400 for extra filtration, but would hate to just add it if not needed. The extra filter costs would add up. I might look into a protein skimmer next. I think i'll let my tank...

tank problems, brown growth, fish dying

Lol, i do the same thing, just staring at the tank. Don't really know why. The $400 dollars is not out of budget, but I would just hate to spend the money only to have big problems. I have also heard you need a protein skimmer, and i have no clue how to set that up. Does you live sand match...

tank problems, brown growth, fish dying

Ok, i'll just scrape it off the tank then. I still do have the UGF unfortunately. Would now be a good time to just take the 3 damsels back to lfs and use that to buy live sand to seed with play sand, do a dsb, and start over? Would a dsb work without Live Rock? I'm not sure I want to invest...

tank problems, brown growth, fish dying

Oh also, I was wanting to know if I should order some Black Diamond for my media container in my emperor 280. I read you could use carbon to help do "something", not sure I remember what. lol. Would anyone recommend this?

tank problems, brown growth, fish dying

The dominos are doing great. They don't seem to show any signs that the others did. They seem to be breathing fine and eating well. I will be keeping them, not just for cycling the tank, because I do like them a lot. So I shouldn't scrape the brown diatoms off anymore then, ok that's easy...

tank problems, brown growth, fish dying

Ok, thanks for the reply. Should I be trying to scrape this stuff off the glass or rocks at all? I did use my algae sponge thingy to get some off the glass about a week ago. It is in full force now though, the tops of my rocks are covered in it. Should I try getting it off the rocks at all...

tank problems, brown growth, fish dying

Last night my yellow tang died. I bought a clarki clown 3 days ago. He just died this morning. My yellow tail damsel is looking bad. My two dominos look great though. I need to take my water to get tested today ( i know i need a test kit ). I have brown algae that has pretty much gone...

    Cycling Damsels! MUST READ

Oh Broomer, HOW IN THE WORLD COULD YOU SAY THAT. How could you have your steak prepared that way. You should only eat it WELL DONE, because that is the way it is the best don't ya know. LOL, just kidding. I'm glad to see you guys believe that everyone can make their own mistakes. My damsels...

    Brown spot on yellow tang

The spot is about a 1/4 on an inch in diameter. Pretty large. It is on his right side only. It is on the lower/front of the tang. I have had freshwater fish with ich, but not experienced in sw yet. It drives me nuts when I don't have an answer, but it sure seems like in saltwater...

    Brown spot on yellow tang

Thanks Marty. I will probably end up taking him back, but I'm sure the lfs doesn't want a problem fish with the way he looks now. I was reading something about "FLATWORM Disease" or something. He is scratching a lot now, has a round browning spot on him, and is really discolored white. The...

    Brown spot on yellow tang

Oh, I am going to get some more base rock today for everyone to hide. Also, I know dominos are damsels, but they really don't seem all that agressive. I have seen the tang and the dominos kind of hang out a lot. They usually seem friendly towards each other. The yellow tailed damsel is...

    Brown spot on yellow tang

Thanks for the replies. I don't think it's Ich, but I am new and could be wrong. I wouldn't say my tank is finished cycling yet. I wish I would have waited on the tang, but the LFS told me to go ahead. I think they just wanted the money. Anyway, the spot on him is always there. It's like...
