It's really hard to answer your question without knowing what you plan on having in the tank. Generally though, if you can get 4-6 watts per gallon you can keep most corals.

To my knowledge what you are planning to do will be fine. Just that the process of seeding the other rock will be a lengthy process. It won't be live rock for some time.
