    holey sand!

I'm noticing there are multiple small holes in the sand against the acrylic in my aquarium. Are these caused by tiny creatures of some kind?

    hermie the homeless hermit

Thanks, all. It does look like they are simply molting after all. I had expected the molted exoskeletons to be clearish and not having the same colors they did when they were still attached. I was really concerned there for a while!

    hermie the homeless hermit

Just found hermie dead--doesn't seem to have been eaten or attacked. That's the third one I've found the same way, and I can't find any empty shells anywhere they may have come from. I'm heading to the store anyway to get extra shells.

    hermie the homeless hermit

I just called the pet store around the corner. They say they have many different shapes and sizes, so I guess I'll get an assortment.

    hermie the homeless hermit

I found one of my hermits sticking out of the live rock--apparently, he lost or left his original shell which I don't see anywhere. Suggestions?

    hermit and snail help

Thanks, SCSInet. I am sure my tank has cycled. I acclimated them as well as an ornate goby (sold to me as a marbled blenny) and 2 sandsifting stars by floating them in their bags for fifteen minutes and then pouring in a little bit of water every 5 minutes. After the third addition of tank...

    hermit and snail help

I have a newly-established 90-gallon UniQuarium with live rock and coral sand. A week ago, I purchased a cleanup crew that included red and blue legged hermit crabs, and turbo and astrea snails. Since then, I have lost at least one hermit and one turbo for unknown reasons--my ammonia and...

Thanks, everyone. I just took it out to be on the safe side.

what do ya do with a dead snail?

Found one of my larger turbo snails dead--should I keep him in the tank to feed the hermits, or take it out? Can I reuse the shell?

UPDATE: After further research, it turns out the fish I have isn't a marbled blenny, or even a blenny at all--it's an ornate goby! According to the sources I found, small, sinking enriched shrimp pellets are a good staple food for them. Any comments or suggestions?

Thanks to all, but to 1journeyman in particular: Where can I go to find info on blennies in particular? I actually went on line to look for information on the marbled blenny, but the pictures I've seen don't look like the fish I have, so now I'm not certain exactly what I've got. (Your point...

Not quite 20 questions, but close

My 90 gallon tank has finally cycled, and this past weekend I purchased a cleaning crew that includes snails, hermit crabs, and something called a marbled blenny which I haven't been able to find much information on. I have noticed that the crabs do a good job of eating algae, but they leave...

Wow! No responses for a week! I guess I'll have to go somewhere else for information.

    strange readings

Great news, I think! Today, the ammonia and nitrite are at zero! So what's next? Wait a few days, and then test again to be sure? Get ready for a water change? How much? Add a clean up crew? Can this include starfish? I also have a lot a diatoms, suddenly, too. Any and all input is welcome!

    strange readings

Today, the ammonia and nitrate levels are the same, but the nitrite has jumped from 0.25 to 1.0! Does anyone have any answers to my previous questions about end of cycling water changes and cleaning acrylic? Also, what's the optimal salinity? Currently, mine is at 1.021. Thanks to all!

    strange readings

Readings are the same today as the previous 2 days. I'll keep checking and posting. A few more questions: How much of a water change do I do at the end of the cycle before adding fish or whatever? And how do you keep the outside of the aquarium clean? Thanks to any and all for their help!

That would be great, but I won't get my hopes up just yet. I'll test the water and post the results again tomorrow. Thanks very much.

Thanks rcoultas--but is it really possible to be in the middle of a cycle after only 24 hours?
